Wildcats outscore Rams 19-9 in final period to turn close game into an easy fourth quarter win.
TOWN AND COUNTRY -- After falling behind by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter, the MICDS boys basketball staged a terrific comeback to tie Friday's Metro League game against Westminster Christian Academy. Unfortunately for the Rams, a tie was as close to the lead as they would get, as Westminster played an almost perfect fourth quarter to get the lead back and eventually pull away for a 60-48 victory over MICDS. "I think we kind of worked so hard to get back in it, that we didn't have a lot of energy left to play like we need to in that fourth quarter," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. Cornell Johnston scores 16 points, drops off nine assists, and grabs four steals to lead Rams to seventh win in a row.
Fresh off a pair of wins over highly-ranked CBC and much-less regarded Wentzville Holt, the Ladue High boys basketball team looked like it was in the mood for a much easier night when it took on Bayless High Wednesday night. The Rams, who have been a stalwart defensive club all season, came out of the locker room and played perhaps their best eight minutes of defense this entire season during in the first quarter, and held the visiting Bronchos to just two points, on their way to a comfortable 57-39 victory at home. Ladue, which has eased its way up to the No. 5 spot in the area Top 20 rankings, has now won seven straight ballgames dating back to the semifinals of the MICDS Holiday Tournament. Senior point guard had 22 points and led a furious fourth-quarter charge, as Rams rallied to defeat Crusaders 44-41 in a critical Metro League hoops contest.
ST. LOUIS -- For much of the night on Tuesday, beginning with a four-point first quarter and a dismally cold-shooting first half, the MICDS boys basketball team couldn’t do much right in its hugely important Metro League matchup against rival Lutheran North High. Fortunately for the Rams though, the Crusaders weren’t playing a whole lot better, and only held a 33-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when MICDS senior Trey Pettus took over, playing tremendous defense on Lutheran North scoring machine Anthony Virdure, and finishing with a game-high 22 points of his own, to lead the Rams to a phenomenal fourth quarter comeback, which produced a 44-41 win on the road. TOWN AND COUNTRY -- From the moment he realized his team would be facing the No. 2 ranked team in all of St. Louis area basketball, in the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament, Ladue High head coach Chad Anderson preached the same mantra over and over again. "I told our kids (Thursday) at practice, and (Friday) before the game," said Anderson, "in order for us to win the big games, you've got to believe in yourself, number one. You've got to compete. And you've got to trust your teammates. And I think that is the difference in this team and the past teams we've had. These kids believe." Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.
The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. Senior three-sport star was gone for a week, preparing for and playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game in San Antonio, but came back on Tuesday to lead JBS to a 64-54 win over Prin.
After spending what he termed a "life-changing" week in San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl high school football all-star game, which was played last Saturday at the Alamodome and televised nationally by NBC, John Burroughs senior Ezekiel Elliott was just hoping not to look too rusty in his first basketball game back with the Bombers on Tuesday. Elliott, a football star for the Bombers, who will play collegiately at Ohio State University next year, flew back to St. Louis on Sunday, and only had time for one practice with the team before Tuesday's key Metro League conference game against rival Principia. The entire John Burroughs community is abuzz over football star Ezekiel Elliott's trip to San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game that will kickoff in front of a national audience at high noon today. Just about anyone with any type of tie to JBS is expected to attend one of the many "Zeke Elliott watch parties" on Saturday, so they can see first-hand how the Burroughs senior does in his first chance to play on a national stage. About the only negative part of Elliott being in San Antonio this weekend, is that meant he would have to miss the JBS home basketball game against rival Lutheran North, Friday night at historic Olin Gymnasium. Senior guard knocked down two huge shots in the final minute of regulation to bring Bombers back from seven points down, in eventual 50-46 overtime win over Pattonville.
CREVE COEUR -- With just over one minute left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament championship game against Pattonville, John Burroughs senior Trevor Bain had made just one shot. He’d only taken two shots the entire game at that point, and had spent most of the night helping set up the Bomber offense, while also playing superb defense against the Pirates litany of ultra-quick guards. But with his team down by seven points, and so close to possibly suffering their first loss of the season, Bain stepped up and knocked down two clutch long range shots that helped Burroughs force overtime. The beginning of this new boys basketball season has been a bit of a struggle for MICDS and head coach Matt Hixenbaugh. The Rams, who are coming off a 15-9 season last year, which included an undefeated run through Metro League conference play, were expected to be one of the teams to watch this season, with many believing MICDS might be a team that could do some damage once the state playoffs roll around in February and March. But the season hasn't begun that way, with MICDS taking three losses out of four games at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL, back in November, and then adding a fourth loss in its first game against a local team (Clayton High) back on December 4. Junior Cornell Johnston had eight points and 11 assists to lead the Rams, but had a critical turnover call go against him and a non-foul call not go for him in final seconds of a 52-51 loss to Belleville West.
For the first two full games and 31 minutes and 25 seconds of his team's games so far this season, Ladue High junior point guard Cornell Johnston ran circles around the defenses from Clayton, Eureka, and Belleville West High Schools. But in the final 35 seconds of Friday's 46th Annual Jerry Boeckman Memorial/Vianney Invitational Tournament championship game, Belleville West managed to catch up with Johnston and forced a critical turnover and a missed shot in the final seconds that allowed the Maroons to escape with a 52-51 win over the Rams.
