Ladue Schools to Keep Same Bell Schedules; Length of Day

District not ready to make any changes in a year when so much is in flux.

The time had come for the Ladue School Board of Education to act on the selection of bell times and length of day for all the buildings in the district. District personnel need the time to put together bus routes for the 2013-14 school year. A new fifth-grade center will be coming on-line in August. Three questions had to be answered The board resolved by a vote of 5-1 to keep the option that already exists. Board member Ken Smith was the only one to vote nay. Surveys showed that 71 percent of the high school students wanted the same school hours they already have: 7:40 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Former educator/board member Jeff Kopolow proposed a radical change. Knowing it would not pass, he suggested moving the high school school day to a 9:30 a…

Fact is the school board voted to keep high school start of day at 7:40 a.m. Sorry, no one in the world starts at 9:30 other than semi-retired stock brokers aged 80 and above. Teens, turn off the computer and TV and get some sleep.   more ›

A Lengthy Process to Determine Ladue's Pay, Benefits and Evaluation System Has Just Begun

Spirited debate amongst board members highlights the most recent work shop meeting.

The Ladue School Board members had a lively and spirited discussion Monday night about classified and support staff salary options and the teachers compensation system and review policy as it stands today. Like the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page today. If members of the community were not there, and there was just two advocate parents, two career teachers and one administrator in the audience, this is what was missed. As the city manager of a nearby community often says: “discussions like this are the first step...and there are a thousand steps before everything gets settled.” A journey begins with the first of a thousand steps That’s pretty much where the issue of pay and benefits and compensation review for Ladue stands these days. As …

In 2004, after taxpayers said no to a request for higher taxes, a community finance committee was assembled to try to help find solutions to the district's overspending. One member, a former CEO of a manufacturing company, who was also a CPA, reviewed the comp plan. He went back over five years and counted the opportunities for the top recommendation for raises. He found that in the total number …   more ›

Lots of Good MAP Testing Results in the Ladue School District

District students outperformed their peers substantially throughout Missouri.

Just about the exact time that buses and car pools were arriving at Ladue’s schools and parking lots were filling with teachers and students on August 14, the district got some very good news. The news broke that moment the Ladue School District led the St. Louis area in MAP testing results. MAP is the Missouri Assessment Program to measure progress made primarily in communication arts and mathematics. “We are very proud of where we are, and we have a lot to do,” said Donna Jahnke, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the district. Ladue scored first in the area in communications arts and second in math. In communication arts, Ladue students performed 23 percent better than other students in the state. In math, Ladue…

3.75 Percent Pay Raises for Ladue Teachers, Administrators

Board is taking measures to remain competitive with neighboring school districts.

The shakedown cruise for the successful Prop 1 .49 cent tax levy in Ladue didn’t launch quite as smoothly as expected. Ladue parents, Kelly Waller, 617 High Hampton Rd., Ashley J. Margulis, 46 Picardy Ln, and Jill Moore, 8989 Moydalgan Dr. took turns questioning the 3.75 pay raises to be given to certified staff and administrators. The collective speakers felt monies could be spent in other areas like reducing the size of classrooms. They visibly showed their disappointment while taking turns at the podium during public speaking sessions of the Ladue School District Board meeting Monday night. Each said they were strong supporters of Prop 1 but probably wouldn’t be in four more years when the district comes back with another request for …

Robin, Thank you. You did not offend me. I just wanted everyone reading on this to be sure to understand that there were some miscommunications in the above, that is all. It was great to see a few parents at the last meeting. I hope that is the start of more parent involvement. Our board deserves to hear from caring, concerned parents. It can only benefit the district and the kids in the long run…   more ›

Ladue School Board Approves $3.2 Million in Cuts for 2011-12 Budget

Previously approved spending cuts result in a lower operating budget for next school year.

A $50.5-million operating budget for the next school year won unanimous approval of the Ladue Board of Education Monday night. The new budget is $3.2 million less than that for the 2010-11 academic year and reflects  staff and service reductions prompted by deficit spending last school year. By a 5-0 vote (with two absences) during its work session Monday, the board approved the new budget after the district's top finance officer, Jason L. Buckner, advised the board that the budget had been increased about $300,000 from that presented to the board two weeks earlier. That occurred when the administration added two teachers and two teaching assistants to the district's instructor ranks. The new budget projects a year-end budget surplus of …
