Becky Sauerbrunn has an Olympic Gold medal, and now she can also say that she's been a Captain of the United States Women's National Team. Sauerbrunn, the Olivette native who played her prep soccer at Ladue Horton Watkins High School, had the honors in Friay's 5-0 win over China in the Algarve Cup Tournament, played in Portugal. "Great win by the #uswnt team today! Defenders scoring, a first appearance, and a clean sheet. Not a bad day at all," she Tweeted Friday. According to socccermadeinstlouis.com, Sauerbrunn becomes the sixth St. Louis area soccer player to have the honor with the Men or Women's National team.

A new attempt to start a women's professional soccer league in the United States will have a distinctly local flair. The National Women's Soccer League, which debuts this spring, announced where members of the U.S. Women's National Team were assigned to play Friday. Olivette native Becky Sauerbrunn was assigned to FC Kansas City. The website ussoccer.com has a list of all the player allocations Sauerbrunn, who graduated from Ladue Horton Watkins High School and played college soccer at the University of Virginia, played on a pair of Washington, D.C.-based teams in earlier attempts at pro leagues which eventually ceased operations. Ladue's Becky Sauerbrunn entered the game late, could win a Gold Medal Thursday.
In what those watching at home and talking about online were calling a classic, Team USA Women's soccer defeated Canada in the Olympic Semifinals Monday in Manchester, England. Alex Morgan put the match away with the winning goal in overtime for the 4-3 victory. Ladue High School graduate Becky Sauerbrunn entered the match late as a substitute for Rachel Buehler. Morgan's goal came with about 30 seconds before the match would have gone to penalty kicks. Team USA will face Japan for the Gold Medal on Thursday afternoon, St. Louis time. Miss it? Ladue's Becky Sauerbrunn makes squad of 18 for London
Ladue High graduate Becky Sauerbrunn was selected to be on the 18 player squad for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Veteran soccer writer Tom Timmerman of the Post-Dispatch reports on her selection. Sauerbrunn has been a regular on the U.S. National team for several years. Additionally, Hope Solo and Shannon Boxx, who played for the St. Louis Athletica have been selected to the Olympic squad along with Heather Mitts, the wife of A.J. Feeley, reserve quarterback for the St. Louis Rams last year.

The women of Summer, our side, the Women's FIFA World Cup team are the talk of the town, everywhere. This Sunday, we will collectively watch with enormous pride as the Lady Yanks take on Japan in the FIFA World Cup 2011 championship game in Germany. Winner takes it all in this final game of the tournament. Game time is 1 p.m. CST on ESPN. The U.S. has distinguished itself with big wins over France, Brazil and other world powers. Sauerbrunn, who played for the Lady Rams of Ladue had a brilliant career on the backline for the University of Virginia. Now, she plays for the Washington Federals in Women's Professional Soccer. When the U.S. Women’s World Cup soccer team plays France, Ladue graduate Becky Sauerbrunn will be in action.
When the U.S. Women’s World Cup soccer team takes the field at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Germany to battle France with a spot in the championship game on the line, a Ladue High graduate will be in position to impact sports history. Becky Sauerbrunn, a 2003 Ladue grad, is starting today in place of Rachel Buehler on the back line. It will be Sauerbrunn’s first appearance in a World Cup match, though she does have eight international caps (appearances playing for the U.S. national team). That includes World Cup-qualifying matches. Buehler is sitting out because of a red card she received on Sunday. Sauerbrunn had 21 goals and 19 assists during her memorable senior year at Ladue.
