Vianney Dispatches Lindbergh With the Greatest of Ease, 37-8

Griffs get out fast and dominate Flyers in opening game of Coaches vs Cancer at Scottrade Center.

There are those embarassing moments in sports. Lindbergh shot just 3 of 35 from the field and were destroyed 37-8 by rival Vianney in the opening game of the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis. And the Griffs played without the services of their top performer Brad Woodsen who suffered a knock to the head Monday against Clayton and watched in street clothes. "I was nervous not having Brad," said Griffs coach Sean Walsh." Senior 6-foot-9 Sean O'Brien picked up the slack, leading all scorers with 17 points. He has offers from Harding College, Searcy, Arkansas and CBC of Memphis and looks from UMSL, Quincy, Central Missouri and others. "I thought we played well. I'm glad we won," said O'Brien. So too was Walsh…

Band of Brotherhood Rocks the House for Burroughs at MICDS Friday Night

Foye Oluoken saves best for last as unbeaten Bombers edge MICDS 40-38.

Just kinda seems like John Burroughs basketball has a team divided into types of athletes. There are the slimmer, taller ones who mainly play roundball. Then, there are the more muscular, “band of brotherhood” from the once-beaten football team who can carry  much of the load, just like they did with MICDS Rams gridiron defenders on their backs last fall. The football refugees, Zeke Elliott, Foye Oluokun, Trevor Bain and newcomer Nathan VanSlyke combined for 32 of the Bombers total points, en-route to a thrilling 40-38 win over their rivals and nemesis on “Pink Out Night” in the MICDS gym. Events at this night annually raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Elliott says its just a necessity to play every season on their sprawling …

Letter To The Editor: Support Proposition B

John R. Seffrin, PhD, the CEO of the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network writes in support of Prop. B on the November 6 ballot.

The following was submitted as a Letter To The Editor. You can post your own via a Patch Blog. Thirty-five people a day die from cancer in Missouri. One-third of those deaths are directly attributable to tobacco use. That loss of life is tragic -- and it’s preventable. We have a moral imperative to do everything we can to reduce the toll of this devastating disease on families in our state and our country. Missourians have the opportunity Nov. 6 to take direct aim at cancer with a yes vote on Proposition B. The ballot measure would increase the state cigarette tax by 73 cents and invest $283 million a year into Missouri schools and programs to prevent tobacco use. Tobacco taxes have been proven to be the most effective way to reduce …

I am for making cigarettes illegal. They do no good and ultimately cause only heartache. I am disgusted, however, at all those who have no problem with capitalizing on the misery of smokers to fund their own pet projects. Should the tax pass, the money should go to cancer research to help those who have been injured by this product. There are no 10k runs for lung cancer. Using the illness of one …   more ›

Third Annual Paint it Pink Event At MICDS Friday Night

The place will be packed with students, families all donating to the American Cancer Society.

Based on last year's performance, anyone interested in supporting a night of basketball for a good cause at MICDS ought to arrive on the Warson Road campus early. The third annual Paint it Pink double header features the varsity basketball teams at John Burroughs and MICDS. Needless to say, this is one of the longest and most intense rivalries held anywhere today. The girls take the court at 6:30 p.m., and the boys at 8 p.m. MICDS trainer Stacy Morgan organizes this annual drive. There is no admission charge, but all donations tht night goes directly to the American Cancer Society cause. Special occasion t-shirts are on sale and there will be 50/50 raffles; the sale of special awareness pink ribbons and plenty of slices of pizza to go …
