Residents Needed for Historic Cancer Study

Men and women who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in a prevention study that will follow 300,000 people across the U.S.

Band of Brotherhood Rocks the House for Burroughs at MICDS Friday Night

Just kinda seems like John Burroughs basketball has a team divided into types of athletes. There are the slimmer, taller ones who mainly play roundball. Then, there are the more muscular, “band of brotherhood” from the once-beaten football team who can carry  much of the load, just like they did with MICDS Rams gridiron defenders on their backs last fall. The football refugees, Zeke Elliott, Foye Oluokun, Trevor Bain and newcomer Nathan VanSlyke combined for 32 of the Bombers total points, en-route to a thrilling 40-38 win over their rivals and nemesis on “Pink Out Night” in the MICDS gym. MICDS' Athletic Director Don Mauer Recognized by the American Cancer Society

Former coach presented with the Stephanie Phillips Survivorship Award.

  Information for this report provided by Coaches vs Cancer and the American Cancer Society.  Don Mauer, athletic direcotor at Mary Institute Country Day School and former basketball coach was presented Saturday with the American Cancer Society’s Stephanie Phillips Survivorship Award. This award is presented each year to person in the Eastern Missouri Region sporting community who exemplifies strength and courage in the fight against cancer. Maurer is a survivor of prostate cancer and has participated on the Coaches vs. Cancer committee since the beginning of the program in 2010. He has been a long-time supporter of the American Cancer Society through his school involvement at MICDS, which is typically the region's top fundraising school …

The following was submitted as a Letter To The Editor. You can post your own via a Patch Blog. Thirty-five people a day die from cancer in Missouri. One-third of those deaths are directly attributable to tobacco use. That loss of life is tragic -- and it’s preventable. We have a moral imperative to do everything we can to reduce the toll of this devastating disease on families in our state and our country. Missourians have the opportunity Nov. 6 to take direct aim at cancer with a yes vote on Proposition B. The ballot measure would increase the state cigarette tax by 73 cents and invest $283 million a year into Missouri schools and programs to prevent tobacco use. Third Annual Paint it Pink Event At MICDS Friday Night

The place will be packed with students, families all donating to the American Cancer Society.

Based on last year's performance, anyone interested in supporting a night of basketball for a good cause at MICDS ought to arrive on the Warson Road campus early. The third annual Paint it Pink double header features the varsity basketball teams at John Burroughs and MICDS. Needless to say, this is one of the longest and most intense rivalries held anywhere today. The girls take the court at 6:30 p.m., and the boys at 8 p.m. MICDS trainer Stacy Morgan organizes this annual drive. There is no admission charge, but all donations tht night goes directly to the American Cancer Society cause. Special occasion t-shirts are on sale and there will be 50/50 raffles; the sale of special awareness pink ribbons and plenty of slices of pizza to go …
