Patch Picks: Events and Happenings June 18 - June 24

Here's what's happening in and near Ladue, Clayton and University City this week.

Monday, June 18

  • If your teen is looking for a creative way to fill the afternoons this week, he or she might consider taking the Character Design class at the . The class begins on Monday at 1 p.m. and runs through Friday. Cost is $75 for members and $95 for non-members. Learn more and sign up at the Guild’s website.
  • The ’s City Council will meet on Monday at 4 p.m.
  • If you’re feeling musical on Monday evening, head to ’s Starlight Concert Series featuring the Jazz Combo. The show is free and open to the public and starts at 6:30 on the south side of Heman Park. Visit the U City website for more information.
  • University City is one of only 56 communities across the nation (and the only one in the St.  Louis metro area) that has been granted technical assistance through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program in 2012. As part of the program, the city has been awarded a two-day sustainable land use code audit workshop that will run Monday and Tuesday at City Hall. Learn more at U City’s website.
  • The Richmond Heights Seniors Club will meet on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at The Heights. Also in Richmond Heights, the Library Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at The Heights and the City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m.

  • The City of Ladue’s Public Works Committee will meet on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
  • The ’s Readings in History Book Group will hold a discussion of Candice Millard’s Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Learn more at the library’s website.
  • Kids ages 12 to 18 are invited to help the St. Louis County Library Headquarters staff plan teen events and to learn about volunteer opportunities at the Teen Advisory Group meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the library.   • If you’re looking to make the leap into nonprofit management or you’re already there and looking to step up your game, you might want to check out the nonprofit management speaker series at on Thursday. Featured speakers include Julie Reed, chief development officer for Epworth Children and Family services and Fontbonne staff member and Amy Rome, CFRE, founder and principal of the Rome Group.   • The St. Louis County Library Headquarters is celebrating Black Music Month on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a special performance by Gregory Carr entitled Call and Response: The History of Negro Spirituals. Learn more at the library’s website.

Sunday, June 24

  • The in Clayton is offering an eight-hour course called Power of Kabbalah beginning on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The second half of the course will take place on Sunday, June 8. The course is described as “life-transforming” and is based on the Kabbalah’s universal tools. Students will learn the secret of why and how the universe was created and get an explanation of human purpose in this existence.   • A heads up for those who were planning to attend the AfroJack show at on Sunday: the show has been cancelled. Get more information and learn how to get your refund at The Pageant’s website.
  • It’s time for Musical Nights in in Clayton! The free concerts are held on the fourth Sunday of each month from June through September, and the first performer this summer is Flaming Pie.
