Weekly Golf Tips with Professional Rick Ewing

Conditioning: Part II, Developing Core Strength to Improve Your Game.

Each week, Rick Ewing PGA pro at Old Warson Country Club offers advice on improving your golf game while getting in better shape for the season. If you have a question, email Rick at rickewing@pga.com.

Core Strength - This is the second piece of the fitness puzzle.  Increased core strength will help in a number of activities including your golf swing.  Your core is what allows you to swing the club with big muscle groups as opposed to small muscles.  As your core strength increases you will notice a change in how your body turns and the power you can generate.

Remember, the fewer moving parts in your golf swing, the better.  If you can make a golf swing from your core and not your hands and arms you will see a drastic increase in power, accuracy and consistency.

When doing core exercises it is important to remember that there are 4 parts to your core - abs, oblique’s (sides), hips and lower back.  All four of these need to be exercised in a workout to ensure total core strength.
