Maureen McVey Promoted to Athletic Director at St. Joseph's Academy

One of the most successful soccer coaches in the St. Louis Community.

St. Joseph’s Academy has promoted Assistant Athletic Director Maureen McVey to fill the top spot vacated by retiring Athletic Director Michaela Witcher.  A physical education teacher at the school for more than 24 years, McVey has served as athletic department chair for 11 years, varsity soccer coach for 20 years, and freshman field hockey coach for ten years.

Like her soon-to-be-predecessor Witcher, McVey says she will continue to hold her coaching staff and student-athletes to the highest standards. “I want St. Joseph’s Academy to remain one of the best athletic programs not just in the state of Missouri—but across the entire nation. And like Michaela, I plan to inspire my coaching staff to develop values-driven women leaders through athletics.”

As she passes the torch to her successor, Witcher knows she is leaving the St. Joseph’s Academy athletic program in capable hands. “I am very pleased and excited that Maureen McVey is going to be the next Athletic Director at St. Joseph’s Academy,” says Witcher.  “Maureen has been a member of the St. Joe community for more than 20 years as both teacher and coach.

She understands the Mission: to provide our student athletes and coaches an opportunity to achieve excellence in a program where the highest standards are set and the highest achievement is expected.”

The St. Joseph’s Academy athletic program has a longstanding tradition of excellence both off and on the field. During McVey’s tenure as varsity soccer coach, St. Joseph’s Academy student athletes won four state soccer championships and fielded twelve final four teams.

McVey’s varsity coaching record stands at 512-119-43. She was also recognized as a five-time Missouri Coach of the Year, four-time Midwest Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year in 2002. In September 2012, McVey was the first female inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame.

“I am thrilled to be the next athletic director,” says McVey.  “I have a passion for St. Joseph’s Academy and love coming to work every day—it is a wonderful place to be. I have many goals in mind and look forward to implementing some new ideas to maintain the high standards that define our athletic program.” One such idea involves service.

Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, McVey will ask each team to complete a service project during their respective seasons.   “I want the community to see that not only do we have great student-athletes, but we also have a passion for helping the Dear Neighbor without distinction.”

“We are very pleased with the results of our national search that led us right back to our very own Maureen McVey,” says St. Joseph’s Academy President Anita Reznicek.   “She is an excellent coach and a fantastic role model.  Her devotion to the young women of SJA is twenty years in the making.”

McVey is married to husband Jack and has two children.  Her son Hugh Patrick, 23, is a 2007 graduate of Chaminade College Preparatory school and daughter Katie, 18, is a member of the 2013 graduating class of St. Joseph’s Academy.
