Speedy, Smaller Burroughs Manhandles Windsor

Holmes Makes Most As Bombers' Sole Quarterback.

Senior quarterback Davey Holmes is now the man on the John Burroughs football team.

Especially after leading the Bombers to a 42-18 non-conference victory over Windsor on Saturday at Leland Field. Holmes, playing his first game as the the full-time quarterback, completed 12 of 14 passes for 202 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He was a perfect eight for eight for 163 yards and three touchdowns in the first 24 minutes - a half in which the undersized Bombers offense only was on the field for 15 plays and five minutes, 10 seconds and yet led, 28-12.

Holmes also added seven extra points as placekicker. He even had two onside kick attempts. "Davey really played well at quarterback," John Burroughs Coach Gus Frerotte said after John Burroughs improved to 3-1 while Windsor dropped to 2-2.

Junior Peter Schnuck, who is coming off a bruised knee suffered in the 45-20 loss to MICDS on Sept. 10, was switched from quarterback to wide receiver to take advantage of his athletic skills. Schnuck had one catch for a one-yard touchdown. "It's nice to have Pete be in as a receiver," Holmes said. "He's one of our best receivers. He can run up and down the field. That helps, too."

Of the move, Frerotte said: "Pete, I think, can help us out a lot at wide receiver. He can do a lot of good things. He's a good athlete. I think it's to our advantage to get them on field at the same time."

Holmes said he has confidence in his own abilities. "To get most of the snaps in practice does give me more confidence," Holmes said. "It's fun. I like Pete. We're friends. But, of course, you want to get your rhythm going by playing all the time. We both know either one of us can step in and do the job. It's nice to know that security of playing all the time. That makes me feel real comfortable."

The game started out as if the last team with the football was going to win. Both teams scored on their first two offensive possessions, where John Burroughs led, 14-12. "We knew even if it was going to be like that, our offense would be able to do whatever we wanted," Holmes said. "All week, we talked about penetration and speed. That's what we had on them."

The Bombers defense stepped up and throttled the much bigger Windsor Owls with a ball-hawking, gang-tackling approach. Senior linebacker Sam Hefler recovered a fumble at the Windsor 20-yard line with 25.5 seconds left in the first half. The turnover set up Holmes' 20-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Foye Oluokun on the next play while using just six seconds.

"I think our defense came out and played well and proved to be the difference for us," Frerotte said. "I really believe that. Even though our offense scored some points, the defense held them. I think they had 12 points in the first half. That was really big for us."

The opportunistic spread offense totaled 406 yards (207 passing, 199 rushing), despite playing with a makeshift offensive line. Hefler switched from fullback to left guard because of the loss of senior Bear Kaminer, who suffered an injury in the loss to MICDS. Kaminer is expected to return for the Metro League game against host Lutheran North at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24.

Junior runningback Eziekel Elliott gained 114 yards on eight carries and scored two rushing touchdowns of 10 and 24 yards and caight one pass for a 16-yard touchdown. Senior wide receiver Nathan Adams had five receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown of 59 yards on a bubble screen pass. Oluokun caught four passes for 66 yards and one touchdown.

"We just had fun today," Holmes said. "That's what we've got to keep doing. We don't think about the loss to MICDS anymore. That's a long time ago. We know next week is a big week."

That being against Lutheran North (4-0) - a team John Burroughs beat twice in 2010. The two squads met in the first round of the Class 3 state playoffs last season. "That is a big game," Frerotte said. "They'll be ready. We'll be ready. It will be a lot of fun."
