Rams Upset Notre Dame 2-1

MICDS defeats the Rebels 2-1 to take over first place in the MWAA Red Division.

The MICDS girls soccer team entered Thursday's game against Notre Dame with a lead in the MWAA Red Division.

They left with an even more comfortable lead as they defeated the Rebels 2-1 at MICDS. It was the first win for the Rams over Notre Dame since 2003.

"This tops them all for sure," MICDS sophomore Claire Ringenberg, who scored the game winning goal in the second half. "I really can't put into words what this win means for the team. I am just so proud of everyone. This was our reward for all the hard work we have put in."

MICDS was coming off of a tough loss against St. Charles West which followed a key conference win over Westminster Christian.

"We had the set back Friday but we did a great job of bouncing back today," MICDS coach Michael Black said. "This is a real big win for us. I thought all of the girls played tremendously. Campbell (Torchin) was great in goal and we really did exactly what we needed to do to beat this team. (Michelle) Auer had the one run but we did a good job against her the rest of the way."

MICDS had actually scored first on a goal by Katherine Spataro on an assist from Caroline Militello. But Auer, who is one of the most dangerous scorers in the area, scored her 30th goal of the season to tie the game midway through the first half.

It was 1-1 at halftime until Ringenberg, who had missed a couple of games recently with a thigh injury, scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the second half.

"I was able to get past the center midfielder and the last defender and maybe I caught them off guard," Ringenberg said. "This was the first game in a couple of weeks where I have felt comfortable and confident. It was great to score and help to beat such a good team."

Notre Dame, which entered the game with an eight-game unbeaten streak (seven wins and a tie), fell to 9-5-1. MICDS, which has a game against traditional rival John Burroughs Thursday, improved to 10-5-1.

MICDS will finish its conference season against Villa Duchesne on May 9. The Saints, who play Notre Dame on May 7, are also unbeaten in the league although they have played just one game. MICDS is 3-0 in the MWAA Red.
