Penalties Hurt MRH as MICDS Wins Easily in Maplewood

Temps were in the 90s for game one of the season.

MICDS coach Josh Smith said, “Week one is never going to be perfect,” after the Rams’ game with Maplewood Richmond Heights.

It was more perfect for the Rams than the Blue Devils, as MICDS beat MRH, 39-12 Friday night in Maplewood.

MICDS senior receiver Alim Muhammad caught a touchdown pass from the first MICDS snap of the game, and went on to score on three more receptions.

The score was 26-0 for MICDS at the half, which included a score by catching an MRH punt from their own end zone that went straight up and straight down.

MRH came back in the third quarter with two Elijah Keely touchdowns: a 40-yard run and a 52-yard pass play. (Junior, Keely scored five touchdowns two years ago as a freshman against the Rams.)

The Blue Devils were in the red zone three times without a score, and usually it was a penalty that set them back.

Assistant coach Desmond Riechold said MRH penalties in every quarter but the third hurt them.

“When penalties don’t happen, good things happen for us,” Riechold said. “When we have 140 yards of penalties in the first half we can’t be very successful. Third quarter we had zero. It’s a youth thing, and we’re learning.”

Smith said the Rams executed well early, and were a little flat in the second half. “Credit Maplewood, they were going to play a full four-quarter football game,” he said.

“It’s 90 degrees and we found a way to make a high school football game go over three hours,” Smith said.
