Patch MVP: Three In A Row For Villa, as Golfer Morgan Gast Wins In A Landslide

Junior three-sport standout took ninth at Class 1 state golf tournament, helping the Saints finish second overall as a team.

Well the voters seem to love Villa Duchesne, because this is the third straight week that a Villa student-athlete has won our Patch MVP Athlete of the Week award.

Field hockey star Maggie Grzeskoviak was the first, then cross country phenom Hannah Deines made it two in a row.

And now, thanks to a landslide victory in the voting, golfer Morgan Gast is this week's Patch MVP of the Week.

The Villa Duchesne junior is a three-sport standout for the Saints, who also plays basketball and soccer. But it was her performance on the links this season that earned her a Patch MVP nomination this week.

And Gast was at her best in the biggest tournament of the year -- the Class 1 state meet at the Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, MO, -- where she took ninth in the individual event to help Villa finish second overall in the state.

Patch caught up with Morgan Gast over the weekend, and here's just some of the cool things we found out about the Week 13 Patch MVP of the Week:

Have you thought about where you're going to college yet? If you've already decided where are you going? And what made you decide on that school?

MG: Right now I am undecided about where I want to go, but I’m pretty sure I want to study something in business. I’m in the process of trying to go on some visits so we will see where that takes me!

What is the favorite thing you like about being on your team?

MG: My team was awesome this year. Even though golf can sometimes be seen as an individual sport, all the girls on our team always support one another. If one person has a bad day, there is always another teammate to pick them up, and that is really nice because it definitely takes off some of the pressure that can come with playing golf.

We also always have fun together. We had a really strong and positive team this year which definitely helped us in many ways throughout the season.

Comment on any special accomplishments you had this season. You guys had a wonderful year. Tell us about it.

MG: The last half of the year was really good for our team. We are in a very strong district so we knew going into the end of the season we had to be playing our best, and I think we did that.

Our coaches prepared us so well and we knew what to expect. Districts was such a close match between so many good teams. I was so proud of us for moving on as a team and eventually getting to state with everyone.

Now that the fall season is over, what are you going to be doing this winter?

MG: I am a three sport athlete so I am currently in basketball season, but I also play club soccer outside of school during the winter.

Tell us about your biggest fan. Who out there roots for you the hardest? And how does that make you feel?

MG: I would say my parents and coaches are my biggest fans. Both of my coaches have helped me so much in the past year to improve my game, and I know they truly want me to have my best shot every time I address the ball. When I see them on the course watching when I am playing, I feel so relaxed because I know they are there cheering me on, and they also never fail to get me good advice when it comes to my next shot.

My parents are huge supporters as well. They went to a lot of matches this season and I am so thankful for all the support and encouragement they always have for me.

What celebrity are you a big fan of? Could be sports, movies, music, anything. Just tell us which famous person out there is your favorite.

MG: I am a big fan of Peyton Manning, the quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

Now tell us why you are you're such a fan of this person.

MG: Peyton Manning has had a really strong career and is a great leader for all the teams he has been on. I admire him because he not only seems like a great leader but he also seems positive and I think he is a good role model for all kinds of athletes, not just football players.

What is the favorite tune in your I-Pod right now?

MG: It’s so hard to chose my favorite songs but two that I like right now are No Faith in Brooklyn by Hoodie Allen and Cruise by Florida Georgia Line.

Last question, what is your go-to karaoke song? Meaning if you were trying to win a contest like American Idol or X-Factor what song would you sing to make the audience vote for you as the winner?

MG: Well I’m not a very good singer so winning would definitely be a stretch, but I would probably chose Sweet Caroline because you can’t go wrong with that one in karaoke.
