Patch High School Hoops Roundup: Two Weeks In, And The Action Is Already Getting Good

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

The Missouri high school basketball season in barely two weeks old, and with red-hot starts by the Ladue boys, St. Joe girls, and both John Burroughs teams, the 2012-2013 campaign is shaping up like a mighty fine year on the hardwood for the local teams.

The team that's looked the best two weeks in -- and it's really no surprise -- is the St. Joseph's Academy girls, who are 3-0, with three 30-point wins this season.

The most impressive win might've come on Tuesday, when the Angels, ranked No. 2 in the city in most local girls basketball polls, dismantled third-ranked Ursuline Academy by the score of 74-44.

The Bears are a really good team, but they were just no match for a St. Joe squad that got 20 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks from center Sydney Stipanovich, and 18 points and nine rebounds from forward Erin Nelson.

The Angels will face their second straight ranked opponent on Saturday, when they'll host No. 4-ranked Nerinx Hall in a 3 p.m. game at the Wellington Athletic Center.

The Ladue High boys (3-1) are a mere point away from being undefeated, after winning two big games to start the season, then falling, 52-51, in the Vianney Tournament final last Friday against Belleville West.

Standouts Austin DaGue, Cornell Johnston, and Andrew Maddock have been dynamite for the Rams this year, and each took turns controlling their last matchup, Tuesday night at Brentwood, which ended in a 65-50 victory over the Eagles.

Ladue is still ranked No. 10 in the city in this week's boys basketball poll, and will put that ranking on the line when they'll face another 3-1 team on Friday, at Parkway North.

The Ladue girls (3-2) will also play Parkway North on Friday, with that meeting set for LHWHS' Nielsen Gymnasium at 6 p.m.

The two teams at John Burroughs are a combined 8-1 so far this year, with the Bomber boys off to a 4-0 start, and the JBS girls rolling along at 4-1.

The boys picked up that fourth win on Thursday, in a 59-43 rout over Lutheran South, and will be back in action on Monday, when they'll host Brentwood at the Olin Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.

The JBS girls, who have won three straight, including a pair of scintillating wins over Crossroads and St. Elizabeth this week, will play for the championship of the Whitfield Round Robin Tournament on Friday.

The Bombers will tip off against the host Warriors at 7:30 p.m., in a matchup of teams that met back on November 27, with Whitfield winning 50-39.

If JBS is going to avenge its only loss so far this season, it will need another big night from junior Steph Kelly, who had a season-high 28 points and 13 rebounds in that victory over Crossroads on Monday.

The MICDS girls are 3-1 to start the year, and are ranked No. 7 in the area among small school girls teams, after claiming third place at the Nerinx Hall Invitational on Thursday, with a 44-30 victory over No. 9-ranked Cor Jesu.

The Rams will get a well-deserved weekend off before getting back on the court on Monday, with a road game against Barat Academy in West County.

The MICDS boys have gotten off to a tough start, with just one win in its first five games.

The Rams began the year at the nationally-renowned Tournament of Champions event in Washington, IL, and went 1-3 to open the year.

Then on Tuesday, MICDS led going into the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold on in a 55-51 loss at Clayton.

Junior Robin Thompson had 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the losing effort for the Rams, who will host their home opener at the McDonnell Gymnasium on Tuesday against Principia.

The other local team struggling a bit at the start is the Villa Duchesne girls, who are 1-3 on the year.

The Saints have played much better than their record indicates though, with all three losses coming by seven points or less.

On Tuesday, Villa led by eight going into the fourth quarter against No. 9-ranked Borgia, but couldn't hold its lead and lost 49-48.

On Friday, the Saints will host their home opener at the Kenefick Gymnasium, when they'll take on No. 8-ranked Principia in a 7 p.m. matchup.
