Midwest Field Hockey State Tournament Moves to Second Round With Full Slate of Games Scheduled For Saturday

St. Joe will play at Burroughs in one of the marquee matchups of the day, while third-seeded Villa, fifth-seeded MICDS, and 10th-seeded Ladue will also be in action.

Day 1 of the Midwest Field Hockey Championship Tournament came and went on Thursday with no big upsets, as each of the top seeds advanced to the second round (with the exception of No. 16 Rockwood Summit, which lost to No. 17 Edwardsville).

But remaining chalk is not likely to happen come Saturday, when the 16 best teams in the area will square off for a berth in the tournament quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Cor Jesu Academy (19-1) is everyone's pick as the favorite to win the championship this year.

The Chargers haven't lost to a St. Louis-area team all season, feature a roster made up mostly of players from last year's runner-up team, and have allowed only eight goals against all season.

CJA, which received a first-round bye, will face Edwardsville (5-9) in the second round at 4 p.m. at Parkway South on Saturday.

The marquee matchup of the day, St. Joseph's Academy (16-7) at John Burroughs (15-6), will pit the eighth-seeded Angels against the ninth-seeded Bombers in another 4 p.m. match.

Just 10 days ago, St. Joe defeated Burroughs, 2-1, in a thrilling contest that came down to the final minutes.

Saturday's contest figures to be equally as exciting, with St. Joe's Claire Sauer leading the Angels against Burroughs' Katie Schmid and company.

Fifth-seeded MICDS (14-5) will host Kirkwood (13-9) in one of the early games of the day at 2 p.m., and will be followed by 10th-seeded Ladue's (14-7) showdown with seventh-seeded Suburban Conference champion Marquette (18-7) at 4 p.m.

The top ranked local team is Villa Duchesne (16-5), which will face Webster Groves (11-12) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, in the early game at Parkway South.

The Saints come into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, and are considered among the dark horse favorites to possibly upend Cor Jesu, should the teams meet some time late in the playoffs.

Villa would likely face defending champion Lafayette (17-5) in the tournament quarterfinals, which are slated for play on Tuesday, October 30.

The 2012 Midwest Field Hockey Tournament championship game is scheduled for Saturday, November 3, at 2:30 p.m., and will be played at the A-B Soccer Park in Fenton.
