MICDS Wins the Battle of Ladue, 2-1 in OT

Bridget Condie scores the game winner with a perfect pass from Claire Ringenberg.

It took a shade under 85 minutes, but the MICDS girls soccer team won the battle of Ladue, defeating the visiting Ladue Rams 2-1 in overtime.

This was a see-saw match that could have gone either way. Billed as the battle of the year, the combatants did not disappoint. The play and intensity increased as the game went on.

Both sides featured great runs, hard shots; physical play and great goal tending.

While Fran Shannon was making point-blank saves on the Ladue end, both Liz Lewis and Ines Oulamine were brilliant in nets for MICDS.

Ladue got the initial goal of the game at 34:25, Natasha Medler zinged in a free kick some 35 yards over the outstretched hands of Lewis. The Ladue Rams were giddy enough to think they would win this match.

MICDS had other ideas. Freshman Taylor Baur blasted in one at the 45:26 minute mark, tying the game at 1-1.

The winner came seconds before the first overtime ended.

Claire Ringenberg, making one of her classic drives up the middle found freshman Bridget Condie open on her left flank. Condie blasted a one-time past a diving Shannon to wrap up the 15th win of the season. MICDS is 15-2-1 with a date this morning at Villa Duchesne. Ladue, having their best season ever is 17-6-0. They will have to wait another day to set the record for most wins in a season with 18.

“Those were great goals. There was no way Fran or anyone else could have stopped those shots,” said Dave Aronberg, Ladue’s skipper.

Condie was thrilled to wrap up the victory.

“Claire thread the needle on that one (the game winner), I just touched it said Condie. “It was a great ball anyway. I make that run a lot and she (Claire) put it where I needed it. It was a great ball by her,” said Condie.

Ringenberg was modest about the whole thing. “We were very fortunate that Bridget made that run. We were determined to win this game. We were not going down without a fight,” said the senior midfielder. The assist gave her 42 points on the season, tying both Caroline Militello and Klasey Medelberg for team scoring honors.

Both team had their chances. Shannon robbed MICDS attackers with spectacular diving stops. She came out of the nets several times to cut down scoring opportunities.

“I didn’t know it was going to end that way, but I hoped it would end that way,” said the victorious coach, Michael Black.

“Coach (Bill) Mirello) called it that way. He called it Bridget Condie with the game winner.”

“That was a great game. The girls battled hard. I told them the team they just went toe to toe with the number one team in the district. If anything, this should be a confidence boost for us,” said Ladue’s coach Aronberg.

Ladue plays at Incarnate Word Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
