MICDS Wins Over MRH in Overtime

It was big crowds and high stakes for the first game of the season, as the top two area small schools clashed in Maplewood.

When number one small school area football team Maplewood Richmond Heights hosted number two MICDS Friday night, the stands were packed and overflowing on both the Devils blue side and the Rams red side.

It was no surprise that it was an exciting hard-fought game.  MICDS scored first, on their third possession, and finally won the game, 36-35 in overtime.

The MRH Blue Devils matched the Rams at 7-7 in the first half, 14-14 and 28-28 in the second, and finally took a 35-28 lead in overtime, but lost the lead and the game on the final MICDS overtime fourth down win-or-lose play when the Rams gave the ball to their Division 1 athlete Michael Scherer (accepted to Missouri), who took it in from the two for a two-point conversion.

"We've got a Division 1 athlete," MICDS coach Josh Smith said, "so at the end of the game, who's hands do you want the ball in? It makes us look like good coaches, but bottom line, we've got good kids.

"They're hungry, it's an awesome senior class, they have fun together, they train together," Smith said. "Conditioning and preparation met at one, and they found a way at the end."
