MICDS Remains Perfect WIth Win Over Borgia

Delaney Hobbs returns and scores career point 1,000 in 49-39 victory.

Delaney Hobbs scored her 1,000th career point and the MICDS girls basketball team won their fifth game in a row to start the season with a 49-39 win over St. Francis Borgia Friday night at MICDS.

Hobbs was playing her first game of the season after tearing her ACL in a summer league game June 29. The senior entered the game late in the first quarter and hit a regulation field goal in the second quarter and followed with a 3-pointer which gave her the milestone.

"I didn't know it when it happened but I was glad it was a 3-pointer," Hobbs said. "It was just so good to be out there again. I missed all of volleyball season and I was not about to miss my senior year of basketball."

Hobbs came back a month and a half ahead of schedule and played a good portion of the game.

"I played more than I expected," said Hobbs, who finished with 10 points. "I thought I was only going to play six or seven minutes."

She would play a lot more than that.

"I think she was in there for almost 20 minutes," MICDS Coach Scott Small said. "She got the clearance to play yesterday and I thought why not throw her in right away. I think she looked great. She fit right in. I know she considers herself a shooter and she is. But I was impressed with the defense she played tonight."

Junior Campbell Torchin broke out of a mini shooting slump as she hit a career-high five 3-pointers to pace the Rams' offense.

"I have had a couple of off shooting games but we were all ready to play this game," said Torchin who hit a trey in all four quarters. "They beat us badly last year (55-22) and we really wanted this victory. I was shooting it well during the warm-ups and it just felt good coming out of my hands tonight."

It was an emotional night as well with the return of Delaney.

"We thought maybe she would be back at the end of December," Torchin said. "She shocked us in a good way. It was good to have her back. She brings a lot of teamwork and leadership."

Emily Kyman hit a pair of 3-pointers and Torchin hit one in the first four minutes of the game as MICDS jumped to a quick six-point lead. Borgia would tie it before the end of the quarter but the Rams outscored the Knights 17-9 in the second quarter.

Borgia tailed by only six points at 40-34 in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by Katie Thomas. But that was as close as they would get as Torchin answered with a big 3-pointer.

"It was great to see Campbell shoot it so well tonight," Small said. "We shot lights out in the first half. We can be streaky from the outside but with players like Campbell, Emily and Delaney we have the ability to shoot it well."

Torchin led all scorers with 19 points. Hobbs had 10 and Kyman and Cameron Jackson added eight for the Rams, who improved to 5-0.

Thomas had 14 and Jodi Klott 13 for the Knights, who fell to 2-5. Four of Borgia's losses have come by 10 points or less.
