MICDS Hosting Summer Basketball Camps

The boys have three sessions while the girls will have camp from June 20-24.

High school and college basketball seasons have been over for quite a while and the National Basketball Association finally capped off its long post-season Sunday with the championship by the Dallas Mavericks.

But that does not mean that the basketballs have been put up for the summer, at least not at MICDS.

The school began hosting four weeks of basketball camp this week as the boys had their first session from June 13-17 at McDonnell Gym.

The girls will follow with their Triple Threat Basketball Camp which will be held from June 20-24 at McDonnell Gym. The camp is open for girls from grades two through eighth and will begin at 9 a.m. each day and finish at 3 p.m.

Current Ram girls coach Scott Small is in charge of the girl's camp.

"I don't think too many public schools have camps like this and not all of the private schools do but we have been having one for at least the last 15 years," Small said. "We used to have a three-on-three camp which was very popular but we have gone to the one-week camp."

Small said that he anticipates having as many as 60 girls at the camp. There are a handful of camp objectives: improve their basketball specific skills; develop good practice habits; learn more about the game; work and play with others; and have fun while playing hard.

"It is always a rewarding week for me," Small said. "A lot of the high schools kids are out there and they love working with the younger kids. We work on the basics such as passing, dribbling and shooting and we try to make it a lot of fun. We do have a lot of three-on-three games."

Small said that the staff includes not only current and former MICDS players and coaches but also other area players and coaches, including current and former collegiate athletes.

"This is a camp which is not just for MICDS students," Small said. "We get kids from around the area. There were three girls on this year's Ladue team which used to go to our camps. It is a nice way to make some connections."

The first week of the boys camp ends Friday and then the girls have their week of camping.

The second week of the boys camp, which also is for grades two-eight and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m, will run from June 27-July 1.

The boys will conclude came with an accelerated offensive skills camp. That will be held from July 5-8 from 9-3 and will be available for players from the fourth through eighth grade.
