MICDS Has John Burroughs' Number

Rams Blast Bombers, 45-20, In Latest Battle

MICDS senior quarterback Thomas Militello wanted to remember two numbers entering the Rams football rivalry with host John Burroughs on Saturday: 21-0, which represents the score of last season's loss, and 5-5, which represents the Rams 2010 record.

"We wanted to return to our winning ways," Militello said. "We're not accustomed to losing."

Militello, his Rams teammates, fans and coaches like these numbers better. The Rams manhandled John Burroughs, 45-20, to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Metro League. MICDS saw its nine-game winning streak against the Bombers snapped in 2010. "Now we want to win nine more in a row," Militello said. "Wherever you go in the MICDS community, you are told one thing: Don't lose to Burroughs."

Militello, whose father, Mark, was a standout for the Rams in the late 1970's and later at Duke University, also liked these numbers. MICDS scored on four of its first five offensive possessions. Militello completed 23 of 32 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns of 26, nine and 50 yards and rushed for a two-yard touchdown.

Senior runningback Michael Scherer, Missouri bound as a middle linebacker, gained 121 yards on 18 attempts and scored two rushing touchdowns of three and one yard. He also was part of a 50-yard hook-and-ladder touchdown pass from Militello to senior wide receiver Jack Howell, who quickly pitched the football to Scherer, who went the final 39 yards.

Senior runningback A.J. Washington had 168 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown of eight yards. Howell caught 10 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns of 26 and nine yards.

The offensive line paved the way for MICDS' success on the ground  and through the air. "We wanted to bring back the tradition and to beat them like that is a great feeling," Scherer said. "Everyone points to this game. We play teams like Maplewood and (Jefferson City) Helias. They circle those games on our schedule. This is a bigger game for all the MICDS community. We like to take it as another game. It's as big as any game we play in the season."

John Burroughs Coach Gus Frerotte said the better team won. The Bombers (2-1, 1-1 in league) had little success. Junior runningback Ezekiel Elliott scored twice on three and one yard. He had just 42 yards on 12 attempts. Senior quarterback Davey O'Brien and senior wide receiver Steven Trulaske collaborated for a 36-yard touchdown.

Worse, Frerotte said injuries to five players during the loss may dampen the Bombers hopes for the rest of the season. Frerotte said it is unknown how long junior quarterback Peter Schnuck, junior lineman Solo Ceasey, senior lineman Bear Kaminer, sophomore lineman Jack Maritz and junior runninback/linebacker Oluokun Foye will be out.

"We got chopped up," Frerotte said. "They have a lot of real good players. You have to play your best game against a team like them. Every year is different. Every game is new."

MICDS Coach Josh Smith, 3-1 against John Burroughs, said the rivalry "was once called a blood-and-guts rivalry" when the two schools met in the last week of the regular season. "Now it's a bragging-rights rivalry," Smith said. "Both are going to move on. It's nice we have the bragging rights for a year. It's always nice to beat those guys. We're trying to be the best team we can be at the end of the season."

Perhaps the result will produce memorable numbers.
