MICDS Girls Win Skippy Keefer Relays

John Burroughs sophomore Ezekiel Elliott shines in the 110-meter hurdles. DQ'd in the 300 Intermediates.

John Burroughs sophomore Ezekiel Elliott could only lower his head as the final heat of the 300-meter intermediate hurdles was run Saturday at the Skippy Keefer Relays at John Burroughs.

Elliott was a heavy favorite in the event after running away with the title in the 110-meter hurdles earlier in the day.

But Elliott was disqualified in the 300-hurdles because of a false start.

"I guess I was too anxious," Elliott said. "I will have to use that as a learning lession. I am glad I did that now rather than later."

The misfortunes in the 300-hurdles brings back bad memories for Elliott. He was one of the top runners in the state in Class 3 in that event last year but fell in the districts.

"Someone fell in my lane," Elliott said of the district meet. "I actually thought I had a better chance in that event than the 11o's although I like them both."

Elliott made quite an impression as a freshman last year at state in the 110's finishing third with a time of 14.92. The two runners who finished ahead of him, Spencer Dudley of St. Charles and Martin Hill of Lutheran North, were seniors.

He seems on track this year as he ran a 14.8 Saturday.

"There is going to be some good competition this year," Elliott said. "There is a good kid from Grandview (Dapo Akimmoladun) who will run in Class 3 this year after running in Class 4 last year. I am working hard and hopefully can win state in the 110's and I want to get it in the 300's as well."

MICDS won the girls team title at the Skippy Keefer Relays with a well-rounded effort.

"The coaching staff has been excited because the girls are practicing at a much higher purpose this year," MICDS coach Jim Lohr said. "It was good to see that hard work rewarded today. The girls were satisfied with what they did but not satisfied. They realize that bigger things are on the horizon. I felt that to a person, they all competed hard today."

One highlight was the win in the discus by senior captain Jasmin Musaddiq with a school record throw of 122-10.

Senior Lauren Waterbury had another outstanding day as she won an individual event as well as being a part of two relays.

Waterbury won the long jump (17-9) and ran a leg in both the 4x100-meter relay team (along with senior Kate Pflager, junior Heather Cousins and sophomore Julia Olsen) and the 4x200-meter relay team (along with Cousins and sophomores Cameron Jackson and CeCe Moore). Both of those relays finished in first place. The 4x100 team ran a 50.6 while the 4x200 finished with a 1:45.6.

MICDS' Elizabeth Mueller was second in the triple jump.

The Rams won the girls event comfortably with 103.5 points. Affton was second with 68 while St. Joseph's Academy was third with 51 points. John Burroughs was sixth in the girls.

St. Joe's had a pair of individual champions as junior Krista Menghini won the 3,200-meter run (12:09) while senior Annie Shaughnessy won the high jump (5-1). The Angels young distance medley team of Menghini, sophomores Lucy May and  Jane Potter and freshman Emma Barden finished second.

The John Burroughs' girls were paced by senior Hannah Heard, who finished second in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

Elliott's win in the 110-meter hurdles helped John Burroughs to a third place finish in the boys meet. Senior Fade Oluokun was second in the shot put for the Bombers.

MICDS finished eighth in the boys meet. The Ram boys 4x800-meter relay team of seniors Jordan Mann, juniors Chris Noda and Chris Brown and sophomore Amos Bartlesmeyer finished a strong second behind Westminster Christian Academy.

MICDS senior Harrison Ivey finished second in the pole vault and John Valentine was second in the shot put.
