Ladue Sophomore Scores First Varsity Goals to Put Down John Burroughs

With goals at the start and the end of the home game, the Rams win their last regular season game 2-0.

In the waning days of the regular season, Ladue, 10-11 overall, faced John Burroughs, 4-8 overall, and came up with a 2-0 home win.

The Rams'  first goal came a little over four minutes into the game. It came off a restart, and Burroughs had the first touch, but didn't get it going in the right direction. Ladue sophomore Morgan Moore had the breakaway down the left side and put it in the far corner. It was her very first varsity goal.

"She wasn't a starter at first," Ladue coach Dave Aronberg said. "She just kind of started playing in the starter role, learning how to make good runs, and it's paying off. She's always had the speed to do it. She just needed to learn the touch."

At the end of the second period, with the score 1-0 for Ladue, as it had been most of the game, Burroughs had pulled most players up to play offense. A turnover gave the ball to sophomore Emily Isaacs, who found Moore running down the right side.

Moore had the Rams final goal with just over 30 seconds left in the game. It was her second varsity goal ever. "The goalie came out, and I ran right past her. Lucky shot.
It was on my feet,  and I just took it in for myself," Moore said.

"I had told the keeper (freshman, Haley Botteron) to play up high, and she just got caught, she was a little tentative," Burroughs coach Allan Trzecki said. "That indecision gave the player a chance to win the first touch, and pass it underneath her."

Other than those two goals, the Bombers looked good, they just couldn't score. "We manufactured chances, that we didn't get a good final touch on, to get it finished," Trzecki said.

Its no coincidence that Ladue's star of the day was a sophomore, most of the team are sophomores and freshmen. Actually, being their last home game, it would have been seniors' day, if they had any. Only two starters are even juniors.

"I think in a couple of years we're going to be pretty decent. And we're starting to show it now," Aronberg said. They've won six out of their last seven.

Ladue's next game is in districts, against Nerinx Hall (15-6) at Webster on Saturday.

John Burroughs plays at Lutheran North on Thursday, then they start district play against Maplewood Richmond Heights on Tuesday. Burroughs is hosting their districts.
