Ladue on the Road; Burroughs, MICDS All Face Major Tests at Home Today

Local football teams move into the fourth week of the season, all seeking wins today.

Each week, local football team get to take a test.

The MICDS Rams have been tested three times, and all with passing marks. The Rams earned a hard-fought 36-35 overtime win over rugged Maplewood to open the season. They tested positively beating Lutheran South 48-7 and rival John Burroughs 45-20.

The big test comes at home today at 1 p.m. The visitors are one of the states’s most consistent teams, 2-1 Jefferson City Helias.

“They (Helias) finished runners up two the last three years,” said Rams’ coach Josh Smith. “They run a spread offense; they have a tough offense and a really good quarterback. Defensively, they are a very aggressive 4-3 team and they are well coached from top to bottom,” said Smith.

The Rams will unharness their one-two attack, 6-foot-3 quarterback Thomas Militello and 238 pound punishing two-way star Michael Scherer.

Militello, who is being courted by a wide variety of schools has connected on 40 of 65 attempts for 605 yards and seven TDs. His favorite target is wide receiver Jack Howell who has latched on 16 catches for 265 yards and four touchdowns.

“We have a lot of skilled players, I like to spread it around,” said Militello.

Scherer, who has made a verbal commitment to the University of Missouri has lugged the ball for 248 yards and six TDs so far. A.J. Washington is the go-to runningback with 30 carries, 260 yards and three TDs.

Scherer, at middle linebacker leads a spirited defense with 13 tackles, 11 assists and gets great support from senior defensive back Clark Rogers, junior defensive back Denzell Conway and freshman linebacker Cole Sigmund.

This is the feature game of the week.

Ladue Tested at Jennings Today

The 1-2 Rams are looking to even the record at .500 with a noon kickoff at Jennings. After falling to Parkway Central 31-14 and SLUH 49-27, the Rams began to right the ship with a 35-0 trashing of McCluer-Berkeley South.

Ladue’s coach Mike Tarpey is wary of the 3-0 Warriors. “They have an explosive backfield and a good power game. They have some guys who are very athletic and can play both sides of the ball,” said Tarpey.

He pointed to defensive tackle J.D. Smith who is now a four-year starter for Jennings. “He’s a really good player,” said the coach.
Ladue is without the services of scat back Shawn Whitely who got banged around against the Junior Billikens and rolled an ankle against Berkeley.

Deavin Edwards, senior rusher has been delivering the goods. He’s rushed 43 times for 298 yards and three TDs. Brandon Carr, senior signal caller has connected on 47 of 93 attempts (50.4 percent) for 612 yards and three TDs.

Naturally, his favorite target is senior sensation 6-foot-5 receiver Jehu Chesson, the darling of area recruiters.

Chesson has caught 20 balls for 251 yards and a solo TD. Defensively, senior back Daylen Dean leads the pack with 24 tackles and seven assists.

Burroughs Plays Host to Windsor

Getting off the canvas is chore No. 1 for first-year coach Gus Frerotte. His Bombers literally got beat up in the 45-20 pounding by MICDS last Saturday. Sophomore tackle Jack Maritz was carted from the field with a serious knee injury. Windsor comes calling today at 1 p.m.

Moments after the game last Saturday, Frerotte said: “We’ll be OK, we will tell them (the players) what they need to hear to get back up.”

Burroughs is 2-1 with a 37-30 win over Kansas City Pembroke Hill, and a 57-0 win over Principia.

Zeke Elliott has rushed for 388 yards and eight TDs. The passing game has been shared by two stalwarts Davey Holmes (18 for 33 and 283 yards) and Peter Schnuck (18 for 36 with 226 yards).

Their favorite target is hard-nosed receiver Nathan Adams (12 catches, 153 yards, two TDs).

The Bledsoe brothers Christopher and Xavier each has 16 tackles to lead the defense.

The Owls of Windsor beat Priory in the opener 29-27, lost to St. Mary’s 44-18 and took Principia last week, 34-14.

Running back Tyler Dawidowski, 182 pound senior has rushed for 591 yards and seven TDs while quarterback Kyle Barnes has hit on 6 of 18 passing for 144 yards and one TD.
