Ladue Girls Hoops Snaps Losing String With Hard-Fought Win Over John Burroughs

Rams, who are without standout center Taylor Robinson, got 20 points from Liz Greenberg and 17 more from Kaitlynn Walker to end three-game losing streak.

The Ladue High girls basketball team began the 2012-2013 season on fire, winning its first three games and advancing to the final of the Fox Tournament two weeks ago.

Standout senior Taylor Robinson, a 6'3 center whose headed to Temple University on a basketball scholarship next year, got hurt in that game and hasn't played since.

And without her, the Rams had a difficult time in games against Pattonville and Parkway North -- both losses, that gave Ladue a surprising three-game losing streak.

On Tuesday though, the Rams seemed to finally figure out how to play without their all-state center dominating post, thanks to huge nights by senior Liz Greenberg and sophomore Kaitlynn Walker, that led Ladue to an impressive 56-46 road win over John Burroughs at JBS' historic Olin Fieldhouse.

Greenberg, a three-year varsity starter for the Rams, had 20 points to lead the way, and Walker added a career-high 17 points, as Ladue (4-3) got its first win since knocking off a tough Rosati-Kain team in the Fox Tournament semifinals back on November 27.

Burroughs' versatile junior Steph Kelly had 23 points to lead all scorers, as the Bombers (5-2) suffered their first loss after winning four straight and taking first place at the Whitfield Round Robin Invitational last week.

Sophomore Jordan McClendon came off the bench to score seven points and grab seven rebounds in the losing effort as well.

The game started slow for both squads, as neither club could find its shooting touch early on.

Ladue finally did grab a lead near the end of the first quarter, as it scored seven straight points -- highlighted by a three-pointer by Greenberg -- to take a 15-8 advantage going into the second quarter.

About midway through the second, the Rams pushed their lead to 23-10, thanks to another three-pointer by Greenberg, and eventually led 32-18 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Ladue's lead bulged to 15 points, before Burroughs was able to cut it to 11, following a half-court heave three-pointer by Sydney O'Neal.

The Bombers had the momentum following that bucket by their senior point guard, but the Rams matched every score JBS could manage in the fourth, and maintained a double-digit lead for almost the entire final period.

Burroughs did get to within 55-46, following a pair of free throws by senior Sana Johnson.

But there were only 50 seconds left in the game at that point, and Ladue was able to run out the remainder of the clock to preserve for itself a much-needed win.

The Rams, who are hoping to get Robinson back soon, will be back in action on Friday, when they'll play another road, non-conference game at Parkway West. Tip-off that night is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Burroughs will also go on the road for its next game, which is set for Thursday night, when the Bombers will travel to North County for a matchup with Metro League rival Lutheran North at 6 p.m.
