John Burroughs Upsets Westminster Christian

The Bombers use a five-run second inning to defeat the Wildcats 7-3 Wednesday at John Burroughs.

The 2011 regular season was a wild one for the John Burroughs baseball team.

It featured an 11-game winning streak but also a five-game losing streak. But it appears as if the Bombers are playing their best when it means the most.

Burroughs won for the third straight time Wednesday and this time they did it against one of the best teams in the area. The Bombers scored five runs in the second inning and defeated Westminster Christian 7-3.

"We hit a rough patch there for a while but we are having fun again," said John Burroughs center fielder Davey Holmes, who had a pair of hits and three RBI to pace the win Wednesday. "If we are on our game, we can play with anybody and we showed that today."

The teams could well match up again in the Class 3 District 5 Tournament which begins Saturday. Westminster Christian is the No. 1 seed while John Burroughs is seeded third in the eight-team district.

"We need to take care of business Saturday against Whitfield (in the first round of district) and then we might get another chance at MICDS and maybe see these guys again," Holmes said. "Hopefully we can get it done this year."

The Bombers got it done with the big second inning which was helped by a Wildcat error and misplay of a bunt. Holmes had the big hit of the inning as he fouled off a pair of 3-2 pitches and then lined a single up the middle to score the third and fourth runs of the inning. Holmes would add an RBI single in a two-run third inning.

Tate Matheny hit a solo homer off starter Justin Moon in the fourth inning. Colin Henry drove in a pair of runs in the seventh inning for the other Westminster runs.

"We have played very well this year but then we have had games in which we did not play well," Westminster coach Rich Van Gilst said. "The big games are next week and hopefully we will show up and play the way we can."

Van Gilst hopes to have the services of the left side of the infield back for districts. Shortstop Shane Benes has missed three weeks with a back problem. He was scheduled to see a doctor Thursday and hopes to be back in action. Third baseman Luke Turner injured his finger in a slide into home in a game Tuesday. He also missed the game Wednesday and is day-to-day.

Westminster Christian, which fell to 19-4, will take on Principia in the first round of districts Saturday at home at noon. The winner of that game will play the Clayton-Priory winner Monday at 4 p.m. at Shaw Park.

The Bombers, who improved to 15-6, will host Whitfield Saturday at noon. The winner of that game will play the winner of the MICDS-Kennedy first round game in the semifinals Monday at 6 p.m. at Shaw Park.

The Class 3 District 5 championship game is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Shaw Park.

"We had a few tough games," Bomber coach Andy Katzman said. "We had a lot of condensed games because of the rain and we also faced some good teams. But we have bounced back well, especially today by beating the No. 1 team in St. Louis. We made all the plays, got some good pitching and turned a couple of double plays. And we hit one of their best pitchers (Ben Lovell). We are capable of doing what we showed today."
