Incarnate Word Captures MWAA White Soccer Title

The Red Knights defeated St. Joseph's Academy 3-2 Wednesday at Incarnate Word.

The St. Joseph's Academy soccer team set the table for a possible MWAA White Division championship Monday with an impressive 5-2 win over Ursuline.

But the Angels were not able to feast at the table as they fell to Incarnate Word 3-2 before a large crowd at Incarnate Wednesday. This was Incarnate's charity game with the proceeds of admissions, raffle tickets and the sale of items benefiting the Footprints Program at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. The red t-shirts made a festive atmosphere.

The Red Knights have yet to lose in the conference while all the rest of the league schools, including the Angels, have at least two losses.

"I don't really put too much emphasis in the league," St. Joe's coach Maureen McVey said. "I am worried about districts and getting the top seed there. I think we did that with the win against Ursuline."

Incarnate Word never trailed in the game Wednesday. Maddie Orf scored the game's first goal but the Angels were able to tie it 1-1 after freshman Kaley Nieters was tripped in the penalty area. Abbey Stock converted the penalty kick and the game was tied 1-1 at halftime.

The Red Knights Mel Donaldson scored from a corner kick in the second half and Incarnate seemed to put the game away when Natalie Kuhlenberg scored on a perfectly placed shot with six minutes to play.

St. Joe's made it interesting though as Nieters scored just a couple of minutes later. The Angels had some chances in the final moments but could not get the equalizer.

"I thought it was a great game by both teams," McVey said. "Our girls came back twice and never quit. I don't want to say they were the better team but today they scored one more goal than we did."

Incarnate Word improved to 4-o in the league and 9-3-1 overall.

"We were very excited about this game and played with a lot of intensity," Incarnate Word coach Annie Beekman said. "We are starting to put some things together. We beat a great team today."

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Angels, who fell to 11-4-0 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Liberty comes to town this weekend and will play both Incarnate Word and St. Joseph's. McVey will not be on the sideline for the Angels in their game Saturday. She will be traveling to Fayette to see her son, Patrick, graduate from Central Methodist University. Patrick is receving an award of excellence in the study of political science at the graduation ceremony.
