Gus Frerotte Hands Off The Reigns At John Burroughs

Assistant Coach John Merritt will be the next Head Coach of the Bombers, who have reached the state title game with regularity in recent years.

There will be a new Bomber in charge of the John Burroughs Football program this fall.

The school confirmed that Gus Frerotte, the former NFL quarterback, is leaving the school to move his family back to his home of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Assistant Coach John Merritt will take over the program.

Frerotte talked to stltoday.com's Nate Latsch about the decision, which he said was shared with players on Friday. Frerotte said former NFL placekicker Neil Rackers is being brought in to help with special teams.

John Burroughs, backed by Ezekiel Elliott, the running back now getting ready for his freshman season at Ohio State, made it to the state championship game the past two seasons with Frerotte at the controls in the Class 3 program.

Frerotte told stltoday.com he plans to try his hand at coaching at the college or pro levels.
