Denzell Conway: MICDS Sprinter Surprises Zeke Elliott at the Finish Line of the 100 Meters

It was a crowning moment of redemption for this sprinter, headed to college in Indiana.

Ah, sweet redemption.

Senior speed back Denzell Conway of the MICDS football team got his moment in the sun Saturday, finally.

Conway brought down the champ, Ezekiel Elliott of John Burroughs in the district finals of the 100 meter dash on the MICDS track. It was a moment to savor. Conway crossed first at 10.90; Elliott was second at 10.95.

Conway pumped his fist into the air at the finish line much to the delight of the partisan MICDS fans, his teammates and coaches too.

They were all overjoyed to see this moment come and go.

Elliott, toiling through seven races was the champ of the 110 high hurdles (13.77); the 300 intermediate hurdles(38.94) and the 200 meter dash (22.56).

Conway said “I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this to happen.”

Yes he has.

In football, there was no joy in MICDS land last fall. The Bombers obliterated the Rams, 55-7. Elliott sliced and diced the Rams defense for 222 yards (18.3 yards per carry) and 6 TDs with 2 more TDs called back.

Conway, who will play football and run track for the Crusaders of Valparaiso University, Indiana managed just 53 yards on 16 carries his senior year against the Bombers.

That kind of stuff makes for a long suffering winter.

“That race was intense. I got out well. I saw Zeke right next to me and I just kept on going. I thought I could beat him. “

Conway had it in his head quite a long time he could bring down the champ.

“I just had to do it. I just had to show everybody,” he said.

“We’ve been rivals for such a long time. I just felt good to get that win,” he said.

Conway was first to cross the finish line in the bang-bang race in 10.90. That was a PR, (personal record for Conway). “I’m primed for sectionals, I’ll be ready for state,” he said.

Elliott was surprised by the results of that race.

“I just got caught up a little bit in the win after the 110 hurdles. He (Conway) surprised me a little bit. That happened to me two years ago in state. I finally got under 14 seconds in the 110s,” he said.

The rematch will be this coming Saturday in the sectionals, the last tune up for the state meet in Jefferson City and again the next showdown will be on the MICDS track.
