Burroughs Returns To Action With Convincing Playoff Win Over JFK

Bombers are now 9-0, and will face Soldan in district championship game on Monday.

AFFTON -- Thanks to a surprising forfeit by opponent Confluence Prep, just a few days before last Friday's district playoff opener, the undefeated John Burroughs football team -- which remains ranked No. 1 in Missouri Class 3 -- has played only two games in the month of October.

That's not a lot of in-game action late in the season, for a team with aspirations of making its third straight trip to the MSHSAA Class 3 state championship game.

But right from the outset, any observer at Lutheran South's Lancer Stadium on Wednesday, would agree the Bombers still looked sharp, as they flat-out throttled John F. Kennedy Catholic High, 56-14, in a Class 3 District 2 semifinal victory.

The Bombers wasted no time jumping on JFK, with three first-quarter touchdowns -- all by senior running back Ezekiel Elliott -- that quickly took all the drama out of the night early.

The 6'0, 220-pound, Ohio State University-bound Elliott banged his way into the end zone from 3 yards out on Burroughs' first possession, then rumbled in from 31 yards out the next time the Bombers had the ball.

Then just before the first quarter ended, Elliott made it a hat trick with a 1 yard plunge that along with junior kicker Rushil Sheth's third-straight PAT, made it 21-0 JBS.

JFK tried to make a game of it, with senior Joe Lawrence rushing for 137 yards and catching a 40 yard pass early in the game.

But the Celts just were no match for a Burroughs club that remains unbeaten this season and is hoping to finally finish its year with that elusive state championship trophy.

Next up for the Bombers is Soldan International High, which defeated Cardinal Ritter Prep on Wednesday, in the Class 3 District 2 championship game, which will be played on Monday.

The winner of that contest would then advance to the state quarterfinals, where it would play either Ste. Genevieve or Park Hills Central, for the right to advance to the Class 3 state semifinals -- just one win away from that trip back to the Edward Jones Dome for the state championship game on November 23.
