Budding Artists Share the Season at Beasley School in Ladue

Amy Oliver's third graders create ceramic turkeys: great works of art for their parents.

There is probably nothing more parents enjoy than getting an original piece of artwork. That holds especially true during the holiday season.

Amy Oliver’s third grade art class at the Ronald Beasley School in Ladue did just that. This semester, Oliver has been teaching her students what a coil, slab and pinch pot are. Her third grade students constructed three dimensional ceramic turkeys to be presented as gifts for Thanksgiving.

These students demonstrated their knowledge and ability to make a pinch pot base or body for the turkey; attach a slab tail, give it texture and roll a thick enough coil for the head and neck. From the photographs, you can readily see that some of the students in Oliver’s class are accomplished artists.

During glaze day, students were able to add bright, festive colors to their projects.

Each turkey demonstrated  sound understanding of the clay process from shaping to kiln to coloring to completion.

Students added tail features and other patterns and designs causing each turkey to be both unique and creative.

“The Beasley art program strives to build each child’s confidence through his or her ability to create artwork that expresses the ideas and knowledge of the world around that child,” said Oliver.

The parents certainly appreciate that.
