Angels Finally Defeat MICDS In Lacrosse

St. Joseph's Academy defeats the Rams 9-8 Tuesday at St. Joe's.

It was senior day at St. Joseph's Academy Tuesday and it will be a day which always be remembered by Angel senior Mary Hauck and the rest of the St. Joe's players and fans.

"This is bittersweet," said Hauck, who scored her team's final two goals in a thrilling 9-8 victory over MICDS. "We always play them close but we haven't beaten them in a long time."

In fact, it has been a long, long time since the Angels walked off the field with a win over the Rams.

"We haven't beaten them in 10 years," Angels coach Jennifer Bisch said. "This was senior night and this is just huge for the entire school. St. Joe's is loving it."

It was a crazy game with multiple momentum swings. Nikki Hinkebein scored in the first 26 seconds for the Angels, who would take a 2-0 lead on a goal by Caroline Howe.

But MICDS would follow with five unanswered goals. Three of them came in the first half, two by freshman Emily Kyman, as the Rams had a 3-2 halftime advantage.

Allison Weisenfels had an amazing second half for the Rams. She scored two goals in the first two minutes as MICDS seemed in control with a 5-2 lead.

But the Angels came back with six consecutive goals, two from Grace Zuniga.

Hauck scored twice in the final 5:21 and they were needed because of the late heroics by Weisenfels. She scored twice in the final two minutes, just as she had the first two minutes of the half, but the clock ran out and the Angels were able to celebrate a special victory.

"This is truly a pivotal game for us," Bisch said. "These seniors really wanted this. One of the goals this season was to beat Ursuline and we lost to them in the first game of the season. Another goal was to beat MICDS and we accomplished that today. It is very exciting."

The win was the fourth in a row for the Angels, who improved to 7-3. Their last loss was a 12-10 loss to MICDS April 11.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Rams, who fell to 10-3.

"It was a high intensity game," MICDS coach Meghan DiGiulio said. "I thought our girls kept their composure and played a great game. But St. Joe's also played a great game. We are looking forard to the next couple of weeks."
