Angels Fall in Third Place Game

Webb City defeats St. Joseph's Academy 69-64 Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

A 30-point fourth quarter was not enough for St. Joseph's Academy Saturday as it fell to Webb City 69-64 in the third place game of the Class 5 Tournament  at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

The Stock sisters did all they could to bring the Angels back from a double-digit deficit. Morgan and Maddie combined for 20 points in the fourth quarter and Maddie had 19 points in the second half.

But the Cardinals had built too big of a lead and were tremendous at the foul line for the entire game, especially in the fourth quarter. Webb City missed just two of 16 tries in the fourth quarter and shot 84.8 percent for the game (28-for-33).

"We are probably an average free throw shooting team but we tend to hit them down the stretch and we were able to do that tonight," Webb City coach Brad Shorter said. "We had some girls really step up."

Kyndal Clark was especially deadly from the line. She made all nine of her tries, six coming in the fourth quarter.

For the second straight game in Columbia, the Angels got off to a very slow start. They trailed by 11 points in the first 2:40 in their semifinal loss to Blue Springs in the semifinals Friday. Webb City scored the first seven points Saturday.

The Angels did answer Saturday with an eight-point run, six coming from Erin Nelson off the bench. Nelson hit a pair of free throws with 2:30 to play in the first quarter to give St. Joe's an 8-7 lead. It was their only lead of the entire weekend.

Webb City would regain its double digit lead by halftime, 30-20.  The Cardinals led by 11 going into the fourth quarter and led 58-45 midway through the quarter.

But St. Joe's went down firing and scoring as it scored 19 points in the final four minutes.

A three-point play by Sam Stirmlinger made it a one possession game at 67-64 with nine seconds left. But Clark was fouled and as she had done all game, calmly sank a pair of free throws, to put the game out of reach.

"That Clark is the real deal," St. Joe's coach Julie Matheny said. "She had one shake and bake that left us in St. Louis. They are fundamentally  one of the most solid teams we faced this year.

"I was very proud of the effort in the second half although we just couldn't quite get over the hump. We needed to get to the free throw line more than we did."

The Angels shot 80 percent from the line but tried 15 fewer free throws than the Cardinals.

"We wanted to end our season with a win," said Angel post player Sydney Stipanovich, who fouled out of both games in Columbia. "I thought we played our hardest and we made it a game at the end."

Maddie Stock led the Angels with 20 points while her sister Morgan had 11, all in the fourth quarter. Nelson came off the bench to score 15. All three of those girls return as does Stipanovich. The nucleus returns but Matheny will miss her departing seniors.

"It's hard being seniors and not getting out on the floor as much as they would like," Matheny said. "But our seniors showed so much leadership this year. They were an inspiration to the underclassmen."

St. Joe's finished the year with a 27-5 record.

Clark had 30 to lead three players in double figures for the Cardinals. The defending Class 4 champions finished the season at 29-3.
