Angels Defeat Rival Ursuline in Field Hockey

Berkeley Combs' first half goal stands up in a 1-0 victory at St. Joe's.

There are a lot of new faces on this year's St. Joseph's Academy field hockey team.

One of the new faces is actually an old face.

Senior Tori Lage played with the Angels as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to Lafayette where she played on a final four team last fall.

"It's great to be back," Lage said Thursday after the Angels defeated Ursuline 1-0. "This is a new team and there is a lot of work to be done but I think we are capable of doing some good things."

The Angels are not necessarily a young team but they are an inexperienced group.

"We had a phenomenal senior class last year," Angels coach Maggie Potter said. "I am enjoying this group of seniors. They have great personalities and they are getting their chance to play this year."

And so far they are taking advantage of it. The Angels are 3-0 in the regular season which includes a huge 2-1 victory Marquette, which was the team which ended the Angel season last fall.

"Every year it takes time to connect as a team," Potter said. "We are still trying to figure out some positions but we have played two good games in a row now. We had a great game against Marquette which set the tone and we played well again today. They are showing their capabilities."

Berkeley Combs scored what proved to be the game's only goal 13 minutes into the game Thursday.

Goalkeeper Josie Mullen and a stingy Angel defense made that goal stand up although both teams had good scoring opportunities.

"We just need to finish," Ursuline coach Roxanne Naeger said. "St. Joe's played well today but we had plenty of opportunities to score. Yesterday we were able to finish. Today we were not."

Emily Stephens scored both Bear goals Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Visitation.

The Angels will be off until Tuesday when they host Lutheran South.
