After Momentous Game Against SLUH, MICDS Water Polo Falls to DeSmet 13-8

In the Lindbergh Invitational Tournament, DeSmet takes an early lead with Andrew Diemer leading his team in goals; MICDS never recovers

There are many qualified teams playing in the 2011 Lindbergh Water Polo Invitational, and MICDS (now 3-3 in league and 14-9 overall) is no exception.

Assistant Coach Tom Milford said the Rams played “probably their best game of the year” Saturday morning against Saint Louis University High School (7-0, 22-1). Tied until the end of the game, SLUH ultimately came out ahead to win 6-4, but the MICDS coach was proud of the way his team played.

But MICDS could not keep the momentum going. The second of their three games on Saturday, played against DeSmet (4-3, 27-6), was a tough one for the Rams. They played well, but could not keep pace with DeSmet, falling 13-8 to the Spartans.

DeSmet came out quickly, scoring four goals in the first three minutes of play, establishing dominance in the pool. An MICDS goal from senior Henry Stupp, who now has 27 goals for the season, ended the Spartan streak. The first of two goals by sophomore Lunsford Schock brought the Rams within two, but that was the closest MICDS would come to catching DeSmet.

After that, DeSmet scored three goals in quick succession. Two were from junior Andrew Diemer, who now has 117 goals this season. Diemer is the leading goal-scorer in the St. Louis area.

It was 7-2 DeSmet at the end of the half, and after a few more goals for DeSmet from Diemer and senior teammate Aaron Adcock, it was 11-4 at the end of the third quarter. But, the Rams weren’t ready to quit.

In a final push for a comeback, MICDS scored four goals in the fourth quarter. The effort was too little, too late for a win. Freshman Ellis Brown, senior John Orland, and senior Ted Condie each scored in the quarter.

“Ted Condie is our most consistent player. He had a great game this morning, and an OK game against DeSmet, but they really rely on him to provide the leadership,” Milford commented after the game. “He’s working his butt off. Even when he’s making mistakes, he’s still working his hardest and being a good leader.”

Overall, Milford says the Rams just have to shake this one off.

“We had a great game this morning, and here we just came out flat. It’s just coming off that high, you usually have a trough afterwards. That’s kind of what we had,” he said after the game, as his team took a break to recoup and get ready for their next tournament game that evening.

MICDS played Ladue to finish the tournament, and then the Rams will go into postseason. Desmet played SLUH to finish the tournament, and then head into postseason as well.
