Wood Leading Off, Jasiek on the Mound: Burroughs Baseball is Solid

Jasiek scatters four Priory hits and Wood scores all three runs in a Burroughs 3-0 victory.

The Burroughs baseball team was definitely playing a man short during their four game swing through Florida in March.

Junior lefty hurler Alex Jasiek was off playing hockey with his AAA Midget team in Pittsburgh. Jasiek has designs on playing hockey collegiately.

Right now, coach Andy Katzman is thrilled to be able to pencil him into the lineup. Jasiek, who fired a no-hitter in the playoffs against Clayton last year mastered Priory on Tuesday, winning 3-0. He scattered four hits over six frames. Then Peter Schnuck , the third baseman stepped in and mopped up the seventh.

“We’ve seen him before. He’s a really good one,” said Priory’s coach Gregg Muensch. “He throws well and he throws strikes, and we got hurt by a couple of walks,” said the Priory skipper.

Jasiek had good control over his stuff, mixing his pitches, working both the inside and outside of the Rebel’s plate.

“He was really going good today. I was calling fast ball inside, and he would go curve ball outside,” said his battery mate, catcher Justin Moon. “He kept Priory off balance off day. He’s definitely a valuable player to us in the long run.”

Jake Wood, senior short stop was another Burroughs stud Tuesday. He is the lead off batter, and got himself on board in the first, third and fifth innings and recorded all of the Bombers’ three runs.

Charlie Lohmann, a junior left hander was no slouch for the Rebels. He used good control, limited Burroughs to those three runs. But he had no run support from his batters.

“Charlie has thrown well for us, especially the last two outings. He threw seven innings against MICDS (a win), and threw a good game today. Except for a couple of walks, he had command of his pitches today,” said Muensch.

Katzman was more than just a mere bystander. “It’s fantastic getting Jaz back. He really improves our ball club, obviously on the mound, and in the lineup as well.

He’s a winner wherever he goes. Whether its baseball or hockey,  it rubs off on everybody. It is a joy to coach that kid. He’s a smart pitcher and has tremendous movement on the baseball," said the Burroughs coach.

Katzman sang the praises of Wood too.

“I I told him after the game, he played a great game. Defensively, he was flawless and offensively he ran well on the bases and manufactured a couple of our runs for us today.”

Highlight of the game

That came in the Priory 5th. The Bombers executed a perfect relay throw, Drew Philpott to Wood to Schnuck to nail a fleeting Ben Kraus at third base and put down a potential Rebel uprising.
