Westminster Wins MICDS Girls' Title Over Host Team

Freshman Adrienne Horn was too hot to handle in the glare of the championship lights.

January 26 is an important date for the girls of MICDS and Westminster Christian Academy. The Wildcats and Rams will tangle in the opening game of Coaches vs Cancer at Chaifetz Arena.  Until then, Steve Stipanovich’s 8-1 Wildcats owns the bragging rights.

The Cats poured on the coals and demolished MICDS on their own floor 48-35 to win the title of the 2011 MICDS Holiday Invitational. This is the first time the girls field was contested in the tournament.

Six-foot-two freshman Adrienne Horn put on a dazzling display of scoring, leading the pack with 17 points. Courtney Powell, a senior guard had 13 points and junior center Sadie Stipanovich had 12.

The Wildcats built the lead to 42-28 late in the game to maintain their dominance over the Rams. Westminster has won he last three meetings. A year ago, MICDS lost but two games, the second was in the district championships to Westminster at Clayton.

“My teammates supported me well. We were just able to keep the momentum going throughout the game,” said Horn. “This is a great event and important opportunity to play in front of so many of our fans,” said Horn.

Powell took the championship in stride. “We still have a lot more games to play in the season.”

Steve Stipanovich was in agreement. “Its just hard to win three in a row over the same team. MICDS is a very good team and a hard one to beat. I know we’ll meet them some more in the season.”

Scott Small, who coaches the Rams was resolute in defeat. “That (Courtney) Powell just killed us i the first half. She was on fire, hitting all those baskets. They are always a tough team to play and they made us shoot a lot of outside shots which we didn’t make.

Don’t be surprised if the two powerhouses don’t meet three times in the season. Like clashing in the finals of districts once again is a distinct possibility.
