Villa Duchesne Dismantles Burroughs on Senior Day

Saints' field hockey team heads to the playoffs with 19-3-0 record.

It was the last home game of the year and senior day for the Villa Duchesne field hockey team.

A glorious fall harvest day was splashed in the glow of late fall sunlight. Parents joined 13 seniors for their last hurrah, the girls got flowers and silly crowns, heard words of kindness and praise from their new coach Vivi Keefer then went out and knocked the stuffings out of the defending Midwest Champs, the John Burroughs Bombers, 3-0.

It was that kind of day from start to finish.  Keefer is very proud of her girls. They played up to and beyond her expectations and they are primed for a run for the roses starting Saturday.

Teams will populate the Soccer Park in Fenton from early morning on.

The game was tight checking from early on until junior forward Emily Gibson drilled a perfect shot past Burroughs’ first half goalkeeper Liz Rill with 11:44 remaining on the first half clock.

The assist went to Grace Leeker, junior forward.

In the second half Bentley Boldt, star senior swimmer drilled a perfect shot past keeper Abby Frerotte with assists going to Victoria Keefer a junior and Demi Wideman, a senior midfielder. With 11:34 showing on the clock, the Bombers were in serious trouble.

The Bombers battled back with senior sensation Charlotte Martin leading the attack. But timely shots all sailed wide of goal keeper Mackenzie Sullivan who recorded her 13th shutout of the season (three shared with reserve keepers).

Junior Forward Catherine Freeman scored on an unassisted rebound off the pads of Frerotte at 7:14 for the final goal of the day.

Sullivan did her job, turning away the Bombers by roaming from the nets and using some key kick saves. “We’re happy we won. We’re ready for the playoffs,” said the keeper.

This has been a sensational season for the Saints who take a 19-3-0 record into the playoffs. Senior Day was a big success. The flowers and hugs were great but the shutout of John Burroughs was even better.
