Villa Duchesne Back in the State Golf Hunt

Saints qualify two golfers in first round of state playoffs

Borgia will have two of its golfers in the field next week for the Class 1 Section 1 meet at Innsbrook Golf Club.

Two Borgia golfers qualified for that event by placing in the top 25 individuals Wednesday in the Class 1 District 1 meet at Landings at Spirit Golf Club.

Seniors Claire Schroeder and Katie Maxwell qualified for the sectional meet. Schroeder placed 16th overall with an 18-hole round of 99. Maxwell tied for 20th by shooting 103.

In team standings, Borgia placed seventh with a score of 455. The top three schools were the same three finishing in those spots at last year’s state meet.

Other Borgia scores were not available as of press time.

As Coach Chip Thompson predicted, Westminster Christian (third at state last year) won the team title with a round of 334. Villa Duchesne, the defending state champion, shot 360 to place second. MICDS (second last year) was third at 372.

Those schools were followed by Visitation (408), John Burroughs (416), Notre Dame (439), Borgia, Lutheran South (463) and Barat (496).

Jordan Wolf of Westminster, third in last year’s state meet, was the district medalist with a round of 76. Her teammate, Brooke Cusumano, was second at 82. The sectional meet will be played Wednesday at Innsbrook and will feature qualifiers from Districts 1 and 2.

The state meet will be held at Silo Ridge Golf Club in Bolivar Oct. 17-18.

Villa Duchesne won last year's state golf title. That may be out of the reach of the Saints this year,but they qualified a couple of golfers for the next round. Here is the report from Columbia, MO.
