St. Joe Shows Plenty of Intensity in 66-37 Win over Carthage in the Prepcasts Shootout

The 2012-13 St. Joseph’s Academy basketball season is dedicated to the memory of the late James R. Goessling, brother of coach Julie Goessling Matheny who succumbed to Cancer late this fall.

Matheny has been coaching with a special purpose and direction since this untimely death. All of the Angels players wear black warmup jerseys with the initials “JRG” and the same number 35 on the back of every garment.

Saturday night, the Angels stormed onto the floor and ran away with a 66-37 win over the now 10-3 Carthage Tigers from the Springfield area in the nightcap of the Prepcasts Elite Girls Shootout V, played this year at DeSmet.

Erin Nelson (Saint Louis U.) led all scorers with 22 points; Sydney Stipanovich (Pennsylvania) scored 15. Emmie Haring mostly ran the point and had 8.

Matheny very much liked what she saw against a team she knew little about.

“I liked the intensity, I liked the first quarter. You can tell they (the Tigers) like to get out in transition and for the most part, we contained them.”

“I loved the effort we had from everyone on the floor tonight,” said Matheny.

The (8-1) Angels got off to a hot start. The game was tied at 4-4, then Nelson and Haring splashed 3-pointers and suddenly, the lead was 12-4. The Angels steadily bult that lead including a halftime bulge of 37-16.

Haring has done a magnificent job of stepping in for the graduated twins Maddie and Morgan Stock (both at Mizzou).

She mostly runs the point, and is the glue of the offense.

“She will take us to the promise land. She is playing with so much more confidence and control and her knee is completely healed. She is a step faster, and obviously, her senior leadership is showing up on the floor," said Matheny.

The Angels were determined to right the ship. Once again, they finished runners-up to rival Incarnate Word Academy in the Visitation Christmas tournament.

The Angels were never headed as the lead steadily built in the second half.

The starting five saw the remaining few minutes from the sidelines.

Natalie Sims had 8 points in a sub role; reserves Mary Barton and Abbey Combest tossed in 5 apiece.
