St. Joe Bash Sisters Come Out to Put a Big 12-5 Hurt on Rival Incarnate Word

Brice Bement, in substitute role puts on a pitching clinic for St. Joe Angels.

Sometimes St. Joe softball coach J.P. Cummings has to miss a game for night school. He is working on his advanced degree. Laura Flowers has filled in twice so far.

She is a perfect one thousand percent as substitute coach, winning both games at the controls of the ship. The most recent came Tuesday night. The Angels jumped all over rival Incarnate Word Pitcher Megan Flynn for a  convincing 12-5 league win, improving the record to 5-6 this busy fall. They are halfway through their season.

“We won the first time I took over by two (runs), this one was thrilling,” beamed Flowers, moments after coming off Gamma Tree Service field on the Normandy campus.

Maybe Flowers will be inducted into the SJA Hall of Fame with that perfect mark? “That would be nice,” she laughed.

The Angels were doing all the laughing Tuesday. The sophomores ruled.

Case in point:

  • Brice Bement was scintillating on the mound. Filling in  for starter Emily Weible, rebounding from a concussion, she mostly kept Red Knight batters off the bases limiting them to 5 runs in a game which lasted almost two hours.
  • Sophomore Ashley Sink came with her hitting shoes, blasting two home runs over the left field fence.
  • Senior Anna Langhorst added to the bash sisters routine, landing a solo homer in the two-run second inning all with two outs for a 6-1 lead.

The Angels big innings came in the first and the fifth when they garnered four runs in each frame.

The Angels jumped all over the Red Knight starter in the first with a double by Sink, a single by Langhorst and RBI single by catcher Allison Knopp and an RBI single by Bement.

Sink blasted her second homer of the game in the fifth and for all intents, the game was over.

Bement was beaming moments after picking up the win. “My teammates did great. They backed me up perfectly. I couldn’t ask for anything more from them. My change up was working pretty well. I got some calls, missed some calls--no big deal. Actually my curve ball was working well too.”

Sink, who blasted those two homers was in full stride. “My first homer was down, an inside pitch and I turned on it.”

“This is always a big rivalry game beating Incarnate, it feels good,” she said.

“Brice pitched a very good game and Haley (Kavanaugh) was great at short stop getting all those hard-hit balls.”

With that kind of outcome, Cummings, the head  coach might want to skip a few more games.
