Ladue's Senior List: Attitude Adjuster, But Not Such a Big Deal

Perpetrators resort to leaving list in editors mailbox to get the word out!

Talk about an act of desperation?

The Ladue “Senior List” got out again, and hardly anyone noticed. That's that smutty, hateful stuff juniors write about popular senior girls then distribute under the cover of darkness.

I thought I had the hottest of hot news. I thought the list had just gotten out again.

I called Ladue PR maven Susan Dielmann who broke my heart by telling me I was relaying some really old news. That’s what you get for being late to the rodeo.

I checked some high school sources and one said: “I think I heard something about the list, but I never, ever even saw one.”

What a bust.

So, in an act of sheer desperation, the marauders dropped a copy in my mailbox. Trust me, Ladue students know where I live in Olivette.

This is bad news for the sleuth crew. Dropping notes in mailboxes is a federal offense. Mail boxes are to be used for receiving and sending mail only. Anyone who leaves a note, letter or other form of information in a residential mail box is violating the law.

Time out

An hour out of the pool punishment is in order for ignoring federal ordinances of the U.S. Postal Service.

Whomever left the note was hoping I’d take the bait and publicize their cause--which was going nowhere at the time.

It had already become roadkill along the way.

Furthermore, the Senior List was copied so poorly, I could hardly read it. Fellas, if you’re going to sneak out a list, at least make clean copies so folks with visual challenges like me can take a gander.

There are good pranks, and there are bad ones

The senior list sneakers just wanted to prove they could beat the system, and trick the readers at the same time.

The headline on this one-sheeter read: “Senior List 2013. It’s Nasty.”

Turns out, four senior girls were singled out for great praise. Only superlative things were said about these four. We’d been had. Susan said they certainly weren't going to punish anyone for saying nice things about anybody.

The message finished by saying let's stop the hate and make our school a better place.

As I said, there are good senior pranks and there are bad ones.

One which really went wrong

In the early 1960s, the seniors painted in 8 foot letters on the roof of the high school the letters “Alcatraz” as in a California prison.

After getting caught and punished, the perpetrators were forced to pony up the money to re-roof the school. Their parents loved that.

A better prank was of a more recent vintage.

Several years back, the seniors got a real estate listing published for public consumption.  It went something like this: “Large home in Ladue with tennis court and swimming pool for sale on Warson Road.” Turns out, the number listed was that of the high school switchboard.

That was fun and no one got hurt.

I am really looking forward to spring of 2014. Will the junior boys get that Senior List out one more time? If so, will anyone notice?

Probably not.

And stay off my lawn and out of my mail box!
