Senior Day: MICDS Lacrosse Blazes Out in Style

Host Rams hand Ladue a resounding 14-9 loss to end regular portion of season.

What with a day full of Advanced Placement tests, senior service projects coming up and graduation June 5th on their minds, the seniors at MICDS have plenty to think about these days.

Eleven seniors shared their day with their parents and peers; it was senior day for the lacrosse team, hosting nearby rival 18-2 Ladue.

MICDS has played a more limited schedule, coming into the match 9-1. Their coach Traci Nelson, recognizing the many challenges for this group scheduled just 12 games this spring. One game was called when a referee failed to show up.

Wednesday, the whole MICDS Rams team showed up, and handed Ladue a 14-9 loss on the last day of the regular season. The Rams will return to the turf for the first round of the playoffs Saturday against either Kirkwood or Marquette.

Senior starters Hannah Akre, Molly Scott and Anna Clarkson each scored a pair of goals. Claire Rush, junior also scored twice.

Pardon the seniors should they be a bit nostalgic and misty-eyed.

Akre, who is considering playing club lacrosse at Colgate University enjoyed her last day on the home turf. “It was a good feeling to win. We got together with a good game plan.”

Molly Scott, who will definitely play club lacrosse at Southern Methodist University  enjoyed the team aspect of the season. “We’ve been working on a lot of things and it just seems everything came together for us. We started strong and remained that way.”

Clarkson, who will head to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill along with swimmer Annie Goessling is giving up the gear. She will not attempt to play anymore lacrosse in college.

“I enjoyed sharing this game with my parents. They came to all my games this year. We grew up as seniors. We were really pumped up for this game.”

MICDS started out red hot; Elena Gresick of Ladue got hot in the final minutes and put on a late-rush scoring clinic.

The MICDS Rams scored four times before Ladue could think about getting organized. Goals by Akre, Scott, Akre again and Sophie Critchfield-Jain set the tempo for the match.

It was 4-0 before Taylor Wolfe fought back with a goal at the 16:13 mark of the first half. By halfime, MICDS held an 8-2 lead, and it was easy from there.

Gresick, who leads Ladue in all scoring categories scored five goals in the second half along with two points. She started picking apart goalkeeper Tally Portnoi, but it was far too little, far too late.

The lacrosse playoffs begin next week with the semifinals and finals of the local tournament at Lindenwood University Thursday and Saturday, May 17 and 19. The semfinals will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday and the championship following at 1:30 p.m.
