Saturday, Burroughs and MICDS Sports Teams All Take Center Stage

Tennis, soccer, volleyball, field hockey, football games will be played on both campuses.

The athletic complex at Mary Institute Country Day School will be a beehive of activity come Saturday. One Saturday, each year, the focal point of the Ladue universe focuses on the competition between the Bombers of John Burroughs and the Rams of MICDS.

Two gentlemen who will have special interest are retired football coaches Ron Holtman from MICDS and Jim Lemen from Burroughs. Read their story here from last year.

Parking will be at a premium on the North Warson Road campus. Tailgate revelers will arrive early. Construction on the new MICDS Math-Science Center has reduced parking spaces on the north lot somewhat. If there is no rain, cars will be able to park near the stadium on adjacent athletic fields.

The competition begins early with a community fun run at 8 a.m. winding through the streets of Ladue from Burroughs to MICDS. The Ladue-Frontenac Patch will have coverage of that race by mid-morning Saturday.

Here’s the lineup for Saturday’s competition between Burroughs and MICDS:

9 a.m. girls junior varsity tennis tournament, Burroughs
9:30 a.m. girls junior varsity volleyball, Burroughs
10:00  a.m. boys junior varsity soccer, Burroughs
10:30 girls varsity tennis, MICDS
11:30 girls varsity volleyball, MICDS
12:00 boys varsity soccer,  MICDS
12:00 girls varsity field hockey, MICDS
2:00 p.m. boys varsity football, MICDS

This has to be one of the best rivalries in America. I will never forget back in 2006 when the Cardinals were in the World Series and were playing in Detroit. As you know, most of the owners are CODASCO alumni. Most of them were present for the Burroughs game before flying up for the game. That is school spirit.

Excellent planning a few years back to have all varsity games played at the same school. A bit of a hassle with parking and all the various construction projects, but still a time-saver for those who want to see as much as possible. Big thank you to the administrations of both schools.

A wonderful and friendly rivalry. One I relish covering each year. Keep it going forever. A moment of silence once more for our friend Tommy James.
