Sandler Throws Gem in Ladue Win over John Burroughs

Jason Sandler pitched a complete game in the 6-2 Ram victory Wednesday at John Burroughs.

Ladue pitcher Jason Sandler lost his shutout but not the game Wednesday afternoon at John Burroughs.

The senior southpaw blanked the Bombers through 6 2/3 innings. Ladue, which had played brilliant defense, had a couple of miscues which resulted in a pair of Bomber runs.

It was too little and too late as Ladue snapped a two-game losing streak in the 6-2 victory.

"Sure, I would have liked the shutout," Sandler said. "But I am definitely satisfied with the win."

The Rams scored a pair of runs in the second inning on a bases loaded walk and an infield hit.

They added three in the third as Rob Ewald, who had drawn the bases loaded walk in the second, found himself at the plate in a similar situation. This time there was no chance of a walk as he drove the first pitch to right field for a two-run double.

Ladue added a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI hit by Lex Kaplan.

John Burroughs had a runner on base in every inning, but one only in the first through sixth innings. The Bombers stranded five runners in scoring position. Kaplan was busy in center field with eight putouts. He had a sensational diving catch of a drive by Davey Holmes which saved a run in the fifth inning.

"Lex is phenomenal," Sandler said. "My job is just to throw strikes and have my guys make the plays."

Sandler threw 97 pitches and was within an out of his first shutout of the spring. Nate Adams ruined that when he hit a long drive to right field which went for a double. Another run scored on a throwing error but Sandler retired Jake Wood on a fly to left to end the game.

"My stuff was not the best today," said Sandler, who also contributed a pair of hits as he has had eight hits in his last 11 at bats. "My velocity was down but the guys made plays behind me."

The Bombers, on the other hand, did not make the plays in the third inning with three miscues.

"You certainly can't give a good team like Ladue six outs in an inning," John Burroughs coach Andy Katzman said. "We are normally a real good defensive team and we played near perfect defense in the other six innings. But that one inning really hurt us and we hit too many fly balls. I think we hit just five ground balls the entire game."

Sandler gave up just four hits as he had his second complete game.

"Jason did a terrific job of keeping them off balance," Ladue coach Rob Garrett said. "When he is on, he can hit his spots and he throws three pitches for strikes. He was on today and the defense also played well. Lex is like a vacuum in center field. This was a big game for us. We needed to put an end to that losing streak. It's the first time we have lost two games in a row in a long time."

Ladue improved to 15-6 while John Burroughs fell to 9-6.
