Revenge is always a Motivator in Sports

Burroughs doubles up rival MICDS for 8-4 win. Rematch Sunday at Busch.

When Jackson Myer hit a slow roller for an out in the home half of the seventh for MICDS at John Burroughs Monday, that brought back memories for the Burroughs side.

Myer cranked a walk-off homer at Shaw Park last May to defeat their arch rivals the Bombers for the district crown. Myer has been injured, and playing sparingly this season.

“We had some evens to get,” said Bomber second-baseman Nathan Adams who is headed to Yale to play infield next season. “We didn’t forget about that one at all,” he said.

Burroughs had a seven run uprising in the 5th and 6th innings to defeat their nemesis the Rams, 8-4. It was sweet revenge, but short lived.

Sunday, the duo clash at Busch Stadium at 1 p.m. They have memories of that too. Last year’s game at Busch was scrapped because of rain.

Monday’s game was a makeup of a rainout earlier this season.

Alex Jasiek, sophomore hurler fired a gem. He went the distance, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 11 batters.

“He was good today. We were sticking with him all the way to the end,” said his coach Andy Katzman.

MICDS scored first when Clayton Buddemeyer drove home Jack Rouse with a single in the top of the third.

Adams delivered a double to center, scorning Peter Schnuck to tie it up in the home half of the same inning.

In the fifth, MICDS loaded the bases and Adam Putnam delivered the go-ahead run with a single. Clever Colin Palmer stole home on the pitcher for a 3-1 lead.

Davey Holmes, who will play football and baseball at Kenyon College (Ohio) delivered the key hit in the home half of the fifth. He doubled to center, scoring Schnuck and Cory Lester (Michigan for wrestling) to tie the game, 3-3. Nick Beulick was walked, forcing in a run and Burroughs had all the lead they needed, 4-3. Another Bomber walk forced in a run for a 5-3 lead.

MICDS cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth. Mathew Bearman scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Palmer.

Burroughs got Lester and Adams on base to open the sixth. A double steal sent runners to second and third. Lester crossed home on a wild pitch and when a sky high ball off the bat of Beulick dropped between first, second and right field, Adams scored for a 7-4 lead. Holmes came home on a balk for the final tally of 8-4.

Holmes enjoyed knocking off the Rams. “It’s always a fun game when you win. When you lose to these guys, not so much fun,” he said.

“We’re really looking forward to the rematch at Busch,” said the senior shortstop.

“That was a much better game. We got really quality at bats,” said Katzman. Addressing his squad, Katzman said: “You guys are working hard to wait for the right pitch.”

For the seniors at Burroughs, the school year is over. The seniors are off doing their senior volunteer projects and will graduate the end of May.

There’s still plenty more baseball to go.
