Priory Should Give Burroughs a Tougher Test on Friday

MICDS hosts Lutheran South while Ladue Goes to McCluer South-Berkeley.

Secretly, John Burroughs football team would probably like a tougher test than they’ve had so far this season. They have steam rolled Cape Girardeau Central 43-14 and whitewashed Lutheran South, 35-0 in a game shortened by the storm last Friday.

(2-0) Burroughs vs Priory (1-1), home Friday, 4:30 p.m.

Running back Ezekiel Elliott (8 touchdowns in two games) needs a true test. Priory could offer just that. The Rebels got wacked by Alton Marquette 55-31 but beat up on Lutheran North 51-7.

The Rebels have some seasoned veterans. Like Thomas Rybuck, a hard-charging runner who has 5 TDs in two games. Quarterback David Nogalski is 21 of 29 passing for 294 yards. Priory return specialist John Agnew has 156 yards of real estate so far.

Burroughs coach Gus Frerotte has been swapping quarterbacks Nick Duncan and Tre Moore pretty much evenly. Duncan, a junior has converted 12 of 19 attempts for 234 yards and 2 TDs in the air.

Foye Oluokun, talented senior receiver hasn’t had too many opportunities to touch the ball yet.

(1-1) Lutheran South at MICDS (1-1) Saturday, 1 p.m.

This is a key game for both teams. Both are aching for improvement. The Rams lost to Maplewood 35-19 then were blanked by Westminster 34-0.

Finding a quarterback is the key issue. Shane Combs and Clayton Buddemeyer take turns. Buddemeyer is primarily a receiver but has connected on 10 of 13 tries for 40 yards. The Rams need to turn Denzel Conway loose to win.

Lutheran South stomped DuBourg 35-0 to open the season then lost to Burroughs in a weather shortened game, 35-0. They got into the Burroughs Red Zone several times, failing to score each time.

(1-1) Ladue at McCluer South-Berkeley, (1-1) Saturday, 2 p.m.

Ladue lost the opener on the road to Parkway Central 42-17 then quickly turned things around winning in a driving rain storm at Parkway West, 41-7. Shawn Whitely has looked good in the backfield, rushing for 3 TDs. Sophomore kicker Jack Fox is a shining light, netting 7 extra points and a 25 yard field goal against the Central Colts.

Quarterback LeMarko Ball has passed for 9 of 15 for 156 yards and 5 TDs. Rusher Shawn Conway has 187 yards rushing and 3 TDs.

The Bulldogs ripped Lift for Life 52-8 but lost to University City at the East St. Louis Classic, 24-12.
