Patch Picks: Events and Happenings Jan. 16-22

Here's what's happening in and near Ladue, Clayton and University City.

Ladue-Frontenac Patch teams up with neighboring Patch sites each week to round up events and happenings in the area. Here are our picks for this week.

Monday, Jan. 16. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All public and most private schools and government offices, as well as all branches of the and the will be closed.  Whether you take a day off, participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service or take in an inspirational performance (such as the one at University of Missouri-St. Louis at 10 a.m.), take a moment to remember the work of this great humanitarian.

Tuesday, Jan. 17. Registration for the Dad’s Club Annual Family Bowling Day Event begins on Tuesday and continues through Friday. Parents can register and buy tickets online or students can purchase tickets during their lunch periods with cash or check. The event is Sunday, Jan. 22.

Wednesday, Jan. 18. The is hosting a free computer class on Wednesday called Intro to the Internet. The beginner’s class begins at 2:30 p.m. and does not require registration. Later in the evening, the library will host an author event featuring Scott Phillips, author of The Ice Harvest and Amanda Doyle, author of Finally, A Locally Produced Guidebook to St. Louis. Attendees may buy copies of the book onsite from and both authors will be available to sign their books. For more information on these and other events, visit the library’s website.

Thursday, Jan. 19. Eighth grade students at will have the opportunity to bring their parents to lunch on Thursday. Parents will also have an opportunity to visit with Principal Cathy Richter, Ph. D. For more information, visit the school’s website.

If you’re feeling artsy on Thursday, head to Clayton to visit the ’s Sunrise Sunset exhibit, which will run until Feb. 17. For more information, call the gallery at 314-402-1959 or visit the website.

Friday, Jan 20. If you’re a country music fan, you’ll be happy to know that one of country music’s hottest new artists, Corey Smith, will play at in U City on Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 with the opening act, Florida-Georgia Line. Tickets are $15 and $20, and there’s a $2 cover at the door. You can buy tickets online. Saturday, Jan. 21. Looking for a little weekend culture? Check out the of Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee on Saturday.  The performance begins at 8 p.m. and will be held in , located at 6501 Clayton Rd. Sunday, Jan. 22. If you signed up for the Annual Family Bowling Day Tournament, today’s the day. Head over to Olivette Lanes, located at 9520 Olive Blvd. in Olivette. Tickets are $7.50 per person and admission includes two hours of bowling, shoes, two soft drinks and light snacks.

In Clayton, the Holmes Lounge at will feature the Eliot Trio on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $25. For more information, contact the Lounge at 314-935-5000.
