No. 4 Ranked Team In The Nation Dismantles St. Joseph's Academy, 64-32

Bolingbrook of Chicago hands Angels one of their worst loses ever in Coaches vs Cancer event.

If you wanted the tale of the tape, all you had to do was look at the final scoring sheet. In a game where Bolingbrook of suburban Chicago rocketed past St. Joseph’s Academy 64-32, handing the Angels, perhaps, their worst drubbing in modern times.

No total surprise. Bolingbrook is 16-1 and ranked No. 4 in the nation, not just in the state of Illinois. The Angels, riding the crest of a six-game win streak are 17-3 on the season.

The numbers don’t lie. Maddie Stock, who averages 20 points a game scored just seven points and had an uncharacteristic nine turnovers.

On the other side of the ledger, senior star Morgan Tuck, who is headed next to the University of Connecticut had a game high 25 points. Kiera Ray scored 20, leaving several white clad Angels in her wake. When you give up 45 points between two players, don’t expect to win.

Winning coach Tony Smith was humble in victory. “St. Joe is a very good team. The game just got out of hand for them.”

Indeed it did. The first half ended with Bolingbrook holding a meager 29-21 point lead.

Smith likes to lean on his stars. “Morgan (Tuck) played very hard and rebounded well. She pulled down 10 boards in the game.

Maddie Stock was pleased to be at the Scottrade Center in the first place. “We played for a good cause. It was a privilege just to be selected to play in this event,” she said.

About the Lady Raiders, Maddie knew what her team was up against. “We knew they were deep. They are the No. 4 ranked team in the United States. We knew we’d have our hands full.”

Julie Matheny, Angels’ coach pretty much agreed. “They (Bolingbrook) are much bigger, stronger, and deeper. We beat Marian Catholic of Chicago, but this team is much better,” she surmised.

Matheny was particularly moved to see her older brother Jim Goessling toss the ceremonial jump ball for the game. Goessling is suffering from a fairly severe strain of Cancer. “He is surviving. just wish he was 10 years younger.”

Put aside the wins and loses, player for Coaches vs. Cancer is what this event is all about.
