Nine goals, a Walk in the Park for Villa's Soccer Team

Saints whitewash visiting Lutheran North in Metro Conference game.

Spring break officially started Wednesday at 3:15 for the Villa Saints. The 4-1 soccer team had some unfinished business before heading for Padre Island and points south.

The Saints won’t return to school or the turf until the Monday after Easter. The Saints toyed with Visiting Lutheran North in a Metro Conference game, winning easily 9-0. One more goal and the game would have come to a sudden finish with the game-ending 10 goal rule.

Winning coach Tim Twellman handed the visiting Crusaders some credit. “They never gave up. They kept coming at us right until the end of the game.”

But Saints forwards had target practice, finding the net five times in the first half. Here’s a quick summary of the scoring blotter:

Two goals each for Kaitleya Frost, Megan Hillman and Clare Lane. Solo goals for Hanna Benben, Morgan Gast and Cara Scozzafava. Gast was awarded the game ball for her overall effort on a very hot day.

“I’m very happy for Clare. We’ve had a hard time finding her enough playing time,” said Twellman.

Lane enjoyed being on the winning side. “I have lots of good teammates. They did a very good job getting me the ball. I’m really happy with our start to the season.”

The Saints rebounded from a road loss to St. Pius X of Festus earlier this week.

“We have a lot of club players on this team. Lots of our girls play select soccer,” sid Hillermann, senior on the team who plays along side her sister Ashlyn, her sister, a junior.

“Everyone just gave a really good effort,” said the senior midfielder.

Twellman urged his team to maintain conditioning while enjoying more than a week off. “We’ve worked very hard to get to where we are, and we don’t want to lose that,” he said. He urged his injured players to ease themselves back into shape.

The Saints schedule will be more challenging once they return to the pitch. Their next games are with John Burroughs and Westminster Christian Academy. “We feel like we have an experienced team that can go pretty far this year,”said the coach.
