New Burroughs Athletic Center to Open Way Ahead of Schedule

The center to open after just 10 1/2 months of construction.

With great pride, Andy Abbott, Head of School at John Burroughs announced to his school community the opening of the new athletic center on May 23. The Class of 2013 will be honored with the annual senior assembly.

Barring any unfavorable weather, the graduation ceremony will still be held out of doors in the Grove as it has almost every year since the school was founded.

The athletic building opens six weeks ahead of schedule, and the gym, weight and cardeo rooms will be open for the students this summer.

Because of the opening, Haertter Hall, the Commons and the Cissel Center will be released to construction on Monday, May 20. The last school wide assembly will be held in Haertter Hall on May 17 and the last performance will be held May 18.

Assemblies on May 20-22 will be held in the new athletic center. Haertter Hall and the Commons will be demolished the first two weeks of June.

Completion of the Cissel Center renovation (relocating the bookstore, offices and locker rooms) will be complete by mid to late August.

The new Performing Arts Center (a new auditorium and consolidation of the performing arts programs under one roof) will be done sometime in September, and the Commons connecting the arts center to the athletic center out of doors will be complete sometime in November.

"We still have a long way to go with the construction and the campaign but this is very meaningful to our students and our programs," said Abbott.
