Net Gains For MICDS Girls Lacrosse Team

Seven players break into the scoring column for 13-8 win over St. Joseph's Academy.

The Mary Institute Country Day girls’ lacrosse team believes in spreading the wealth. No less than seven players got in on the scoring act as the Rams defeated host St. Joseph’s Academy Monday afternoon, 13-8. After an exhibition loss in Memphis, the Rams have run off four consecutive victories.

Six of the goals came from attackers Anna Clarkson and Emily Kyman. Each got the ball past goal keeper Gabrielle Guard three times.

The Rams like to do that little one-two pass combination behind their enemy’s net. Usually the ball is swinging between senior Molly Scott and senior Anna Clarkson.

“We like to keep things simple. We like to make it easy on ourselves,” said Scott who is piling up the assists.

None was prettier than the perfect pass with 2:37 left in the game to senior midfielder Hannah Akre who scored what turned out to be the 13th and final goal of the game.

“We try and keep everyone involved in the play. We are showing a lot of hustle and its paying off,” said Scott.

Scott likes that little ‘pass it back and forth game’ to set up scoring chances. “It just depends on the defense our opponent is playing us. It matters if our opponents play man to man or a zone. Sometimes when we have to be guarding people, we have to switch things up so they have partners out there,” said Scott.

First year coach Traci Nelson says her girls are listening and focused on the tasks at hand.

“This was a great day and our girls stayed connected. They are listening well to their coaches. I tell them to make it simple and to be patient. Patience is such an important part of this game,” said their coach. “I don’t like them running through two and three players to try and get their goals,” she said.

MICDS got off to a roaring start and led 8-5 in the first half. They outscored the Angels 5-3 in the last 25 minutes of play.

Scoring for MICDS, in addition to Kyman and Clarkson was from Sophie Critchfield-Jain, two goals, and  Hannah Akre. two goals, and one goal apiece for Scott, Claire Townsley and Olivia Polk.

St. Joe got two goals from Katie Prosperi, their leading scorer and Mary Brightfield, and solo goals from sisters Jackie and Katie Karl, Maureen Mehan and Liesl Thome.

The Rams are busy this week. They play Nerinx Hall on Wednesday and Westminster Christian Academy on Friday.

The Angels have road games at Parkway West on Wednesday and Nerinx Hall on Friday.
