MVP Week 7: Calling for Nominees Now

Athletes from any of the local schools, MICDS, Burroughs, Ladue, Villa or St. Joe eligible for the weekly recognition.

This is Week No. 7 for the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette “Athlete of the Week.” Time to get your nominations in. Email them to james. baer@patch.com or add them to the comments box below.

We have a good crop of candidates. Voting begins Wednesday morning and ends at 5 p.m. Thursday. The winner will be announced over the weekend.

Here’s this week’s possible choices:

Shawn Whitley, Ladue football. Ladue beat Clayton 38-21 and Whitley was a key ball carrier. He leads the Rams in rushing with 591 yards and the Rams are 5-2 this season.

Sydney Sabino, Villa Duchesne volleyball. A talented setter and defensive specialist, she was key in the Saints 5-set win over visiting Duchesne Academy of Omaha.

Lindsey Whitehead, Ladue tennis. Nominated by her coach Kevin Lackey, she won the singles district title by capturing all 3 sets without dropping a single set.

Adam Hotaling, John Burroughs swimming. This senior has qualified for the state competition in the 100 yard back stroke and the 200 yard individual medley. Key in the big win over MICDS this week.

Amelia “Emmy” Sprong, MICDS field hockey. Spunky senior goal keeper who turned away all 13 shots in a major upset of Villa Duchesne last week. Her record in goal is 4-1 with a stingy 1.32 goals against average.

Caroline Stapleton, Ladue field hockey. Ladue is 8-5. Stapleton scored 2 goals in the 5-0 win over rival Clayton last week.

Lauren Brandt, St. Joe softball. The top Angel hitter with a .538 batting mark. She has 21 hits and 2 home runs in a 10-8 season.

Stephen McMillian, John Burroughs soccer. This junior is top scorer on a team with an 8-4-1 record. He leads with 6 goals, 2 assists for 14 point.

Natalie Gower, St. Joe Volleyball. Nominated by her coach Karen Davis, she is having a very good season.  She had 10 kills and 3 blocks against Mater Dei on Saturday.
